Top performances: Marist girls swimming, North Eugene boys basketball, Springfield girls basketball

The high school winter sports season is at its halfway point with just over a month before the postseason begins.

Here are this week's Eugene-area high school top performers.

Marist girls swimming tops North Eugene in dual meet

Marist girls swimming won a road dual meet against North Eugene Friday, topping the Highlanders 79-60. Marist boys fell to North Eugene 81-78.

Hallie Walker scored a pair of individual victories for the Spartans. The sophomore captured the top finish in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:08.40. She added a first-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:11.40.

Walker, Rhianna Krivchuk, Piper Van Buskirk, and Gwyneth Westover won the 200-yard medley relay in 2:22.15 to open the meet. Westover, Zoe Manning, Bailey Gutke, and Walker added a first-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 5:13.03.

Michael Coffey added a pair of individual victories for the Spartans. The junior captured the top finish in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:33.83 and the 100-yard butterfly in 1:11.13. He was also part of Marist's first-place 200-yard medley relay (1:59.83).

Rhett Allred won a pair of individual victories for the Highlanders. The junior secured the top finish in the 200-yard freestyle with a winning time of 1:55.15. He added a first-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:18.10.

North Eugene boys basketball triumphs over Crater

The North Eugene boys basketball team faced their toughest opponent of the season on Friday night when they hosted Crater.

North Eugene and Crater entered Friday's contest with an even record of 12-2 and 2-0 in the Midwestern League.

But the Highlanders cruised their way to an 83-64 victory over Crater, led by India Mohiuddin who scored a game-high 26 points. Jonas Spencer finished with 14 points and nine rebounds. Caiden Gould added 13 points and Elias McKinnis had 11 points.

Kyle Bittle led Crater with 20 points. Cody Dutkiewicz added 12 points and Ben Higginson had 11 points.

North Eugene (13-2, 3-0) will have another big test when the Highlanders host Thurston (9-5, 2-0) on at 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday.

Springfield girls basketball battles through adversity

The Springfield girls basketball team (9-6, 2-1 league) saw a pair of wins this week.

Danaeja Romero-Ah Sam led the Spartans with 25 points and eight rebounds in the Millers 62-55 win over North Eugene on Tuesday night. Diamond Wright added 12 points and 11 rebounds.

The Millers followed that up with a 73-20 road victory against Ashland on Friday night.

While the Millers have dealt with a few difficulties they still stand at No. 5 in the OSAA Class 5A rankings as of Sunday.

"We got girls hurt and injured; I mean we're not playing with the same team," Springfield head coach Joe Williamson said. "We got players playing that may not have had the opportunity and our team's getting stronger.

"North gave us a challenge but our girls fought through adversity and played great."

Emma Branson, a junior on the JV squad, added seven points in the win against the Highlanders.

Springfield will host Churchill (3-10, 1-1 league) at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday.
