Proud to announce another round of national recognition for our one-of-a-kind sports department.

In the annual Associated Press Sports Editors contest, The News-Gazette won a coveted Triple Crown with Top 10 finishes in print portfolio (daily and weekend editions), digital (news-gazette.com and IlliniHQ.com) and projects. The projects award was for Sports Editor Matt Daniels' season-long series on Unity High School football.

Anthony Zilis also placed Top 5 nationally in Excellence in Video for his tale of the Orange Krush on a basketball game night.

Finally, our special section previewing the IHSA boys' basketball tournament was voted honorable mention.

"The timing's great every year because, as our readers know, the level of local content is at an all-time high," Daniels said. "March Madness is an opportunity for us to showcase our unique and relentless approach."

This year's APSE contest, with judging based in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., recognized work published in 2023. A total of 169 news organizations from across the country entered.

Winners will be celebrated at this summer's APSE convention in Charlotte, N.C.

It marks our 14th consecutive year with at least one Top 10 finish (section or website) and second Triple Crown in four years. Since 1996, News-Gazette daily, Sunday and special sections have been honored more than 40 times in addition to the many individual and website awards.
