Top Bartlesville-area high school sports performances from Sept. 11-16

Bartlesville volleyball

SEPT. 12: Bartlesville 3, Sapulpa 0 — After steaming to a 6-1 mark last weekend, Bartlesville started off this week with an all-cannons firing road win at Sapulpa, 25-23, 25-13, 25-14. “We came out a little flat,” head coach Jen Ward said about the team having to travel. But, the Lady Bruins (17-8) slowly overwhelmed Sapulpa. Emry Brown and Kelsey Ward pounded 15 and 12 kills respectively, followed by Marissa Demuth and Rya Christensen. Ward also praised the play of sophomore Ellie Benson (three kills) in her most-ever varsity playing time.

SEPT. 14: Bartlesville 3, Ponca City 0 -- In what was supposed to have been an adjustment year, the Lady Bruins continue to play at the high end of their potential. By dominating Ponca City, 25-19, 25-15, 25-15, they powered one win closer to what would be only their second 20-win season in a decade. Kelsey Ward and Emry Brown spanked 10 kills apiece, followed by Marissa Demuth and Rya Christensen with four apiece, against Ponca City. Emma Parsley served for approximately 10 points, Sophie Frye energized the attack with her passing and Hayden Brandon continues to keep the offense clicking with her passing and leadership, head coach Jen Ward said.

Bartlesville cross country

SEPT. 16: Boys, Holland Hall meet -- Bartlesville powered to sixth out of 20 teams, finishing just eight points shy of fourth place. Will Bolding and Russell Miller spearheaded the Bruins' charge by finishing sixth (17:27.45) and seventh (17:31.35), respectively. Rounding out Bartlesville's top seven were: Preston Shoesmith (34th, 19:01.49), Reed Gorman (60th, 19:40.2), Michael Taylor (73rd, 19:56.31), Chase Laxson (75th, 19:59.81) and Cade Winter (20:23.74). JUNIOR VARSITY: Bartlesville Top 30 finishers included Ashton Lindsaybrothers (3rd, 19:37.2), Jackson Boudreaux (9th, 20:12.68) and Nathan Beckloff (30th, 21:08.6).

SEPT. 16: Girls, Holland Hall meet -- Gentry Turner continued her string of meet championships by surging to first place (18:42.57), by a margin of 42 seconds. Other Top 20 Lady Bruins included Emily Lechuga (13th, 20:46.03) and Katherine Manley (15th, 21:01.73). The remaining four Lady Bruin pacers were Lauren Shoesmith (21st, 21:37.6), Maryann Alvey (22nd, 21:42.32), Reese Savage (30th, 22:17.18) and Emma Perry (23:36.34). Bartlesville finished third out of 15 teams. JUNIOR VARSITY: Bartlesville's Top 20 finishers included: Kaitlyn Taylor (6th, 23:30.76), Kailey Malcom (9th, 24:08.64), Olivia Ontiveros (12th, 24:48.53), Kara Stose (14th, 25:11.54) and Keyli Alvarenga (18th, 25:27.87).

Bartlesville softball

SEPT. 12: Deer Creek 2, Bartlesville 1 — With no errors committed and seven hits pounded, the Lady Bruins (7-16) gave themselves a quality chance. But, Deer Creek parlayed a 2-0 first inning lead into victory. Kelsie Yales suffered the hard-luck pitching loss. Chelsea Goddard and Maddie Czaja each lashed two hits.

SEPT. 15: Dewey 6, Bartlesville 4 -- The Dewey Lady Doggers outlasted their bigger cousin to the south, thanks to a two-run homer by Overton and RBI triple by Kay. Herren added two singles. Reagan White earned the pitching win for Dewey and Overton nailed down the save. For Bartlesville, Czaja tripled and drove in two runs and Parker Fielder tripled and scored a run. Mady Nachbor and Kylee Berry each plated one run. Alison Rosson absorbed the pitching loss.

SEPT. 15: Bartlesville 12, Chelsea 0 -- Bartlesville needed this one to retune its offense. Savannah Alden crushed two doubles and drove in two runs. Kelsie Yales added two hits and three RBIs. Rosson drove in two runs. Czaja tripled for the second time on the day and Layla Bloom added a double and RBI. Rosson earned the pitching win in a shortened (three innings) game with a no-hitter. She walked none and struck out four.

SEPT. 16: Bartlesville 7, Chelsea 4 -- Bartlesville captured a second-straight win, led by Kenzie Denny with a single and three RBIs. Czaja added a double and two RBIs. Berry and Alden each plated one run. Berry and Rosson split pitching duties. Rosson threw three innings of shutout ball.

Dewey softball

SEPT. 12: Dewey 6, Wagoner 5 — Dewey recovered from a late slip to skate to a crucial district win. Wagoner rallied in the top of the seventh to steal the lead, 5-3. Freshman third baseman Londyn Bond belted a two-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh to complete Dewey’s combustible comeback. This was Bond’s sixth season homer. In the bottom of the sixth, Addie Dugger hammered a two-strike two-run double to put Dewey up, 3-2. After Wagoner edged ahead, Maycee Smith walked to trigger Dewey’s seventh-inning uprising. Chanley Herren reached on a bunt, Kirsten Kay sacrificed, Smith scored on a passed ball and Bond homered.

SEPT. 13: Dewey wins pair — The Lady Doggers polished up a sweep of Bristow, 6-5 and 4-0, to improve to 19-8 on the season, but more importantly to 6-4 in district play. Bond belted a homer in each win, including a solo walk-off in the 6-5 win. Smith also smashed a dinger on the day. Kyla Overton pitched most the way in that game with Reagan White hurling the final 1.2 innings. In the 4-0 win, Overtone snapped off a complete-game two hitter with two RBIs. Herren ripped two hits in one of the games.

Copan softball

SEPT. 12: South Coffeyville 3, Copan 1 — Copan and South Coffeyville resumed their intense rivalry with South Coffeyville riding a 3-0 lead to the win. The first two runs were unearned off Copan hurler Kam Van. “Kam threw a very good game,” Copan head coach Randy Davis said. “She had very strong defense behind her.” Elyzabeth Odum doubled home Kylee Cobb for Copan’s run. Cobb had reached on a triple. Zoey Secondine recorded Copan’s other hit. Copan next plays at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Barnsdall.

Dewey cross country

SEPT. 12: Inola boys race (5K) — Austin Eastham galloped to 12th place overall (18:32.21) to spearhead the Doggers crew. Scott Horton came in 15th (18:45.98). Rounding out Dewey’s determined pacers were Levi Wilson (57th, 21:54.82), Tyler Roach (63rd, 22:19.79), Tra Hicks (64th, 22:34.04), Will Flanagan (23:41.56), Gage Hawkins (23:41.71) and Zane Griggs (25:26.15). Dewey finished seventh out of nine teams.

SEPT. 12: Inola girls (2 miles) — Ella Jones hustled to 51st (17:12.01) in the varsity run. Izzy Perry recorded 10th (15:30.9) in the jayvee race, followed by Eden McKinney (23rd, 16:45.46).

Wesleyan Christian cross country

SEPT 12.: Inola boys race(2 mile) — Kaden Week grabbed 17th (13:33.87) in the jayvee boys meet.

Caney Valley softball

SEPT. 14: Caney Valley 11, Nowata 0 -- Libby Thompson blasted a grand slam to help energize the Lady Trojans. McKenzie McCabe pitched the shutout. In the next game, "We did a nice job of moving baserunners and generating offense," said Lady Trojan skipper Andy Fox. Oklahoma Union edged Caney Valley, 4-3. Caney Valley has had to play this year without multiple key players.
