Top Bartlesville-area high school sports performances from Sept. 4-9

Bartlesville volleyball

SEPT. 8-9: Second place in Bartlesville tourney -- Lady Bruin spikers welcomed back their home tournament -- which had been put on the shelf from 2020-22 -- with a surge to second place. Bartlesville (16-8) swept its first six opponents (Rejoice Christian, Tulsa NOAH, Sapulpa, Enid, the Jenks junior varsity and Putnam City West), 2-0. Booker T. Washington edged Bartlesville in the final, 25-22, 18-25, 15-9. Emry Brown and Kelsey Ward pounded the ball for 59 and 52 kills, respectively, to land on the All-Tourney team. Marissa Demuth and Rya Christensen added 26 and 24 kills. Emma Parsley tallied 18 aces and made 60 assists. Hayden Brandon amassed 90 assists. "We played great," Bartlesville head coach Jen Ward summarized.

Bartlesville cross country

SEPT. 8: Claremore varsity girls meet -- Once again, senior Gentry "Blue Flash" Turner led the Lady Bruins. They won the girls varsity team title, with Turner powering to first place (:18.56.85) by a margin of nearly two minutes. Other Lady Bruins in the top 20 included: Emily Lechuga (3rd, 20:52.46), Lauren Shoesmith (6th, 21:54.24), Katherine Manley (8th, 22:03.78). Reese Savage (12th, 22:30.84), Maryann Alvey (13th, 22:46.23), and Emma Perry (20th, 23:32.23).

SEPT. 8: Claremore varsity boys meet -- Will Bolding galloped to fourth place (17:15.18) to pace Bartlesville to fourth as a team. Russell Miller notched 10th place (17:57.67). Rounding out the top seven Bruin finishers were: Cade Winter (35th, 19:47.03), Michael Taylor (37th, 19:48.39), Chase Laxson (44th, 19:54.84), Grayson Tesavis (45th, 19:57.56) and Preston Shoesmith (53rd, 20:09.57).

Area cross country

Sept. 8: Claremore varsity runs -- Following is a look at other area schools that participated: Dewey boys (Scott Horton, 19:51.75; Austin Eastham, Tra Hicks, Will Flanagan, Gage Hawkins, Zane Griggs and Tyler Roach); Pawhuska boys (Dalton Reed, 21:17.53; Pierce Kendrick, Landon Dickey, Aaron Choate, Landon Hodgson and Aaron Choate); Wesleyan Christian boy (Kaden Week, 22:51.68); Oklahoma Union boys (Trea Tanner, 23:29.54; Deakyn Hendrix, James Bottoms, Lomas Martinez, Jimmy Williams, Jack Campos, Wyatt Maxey and others); Dewey girls (Izzy Perry, 16:29.79; Eden McKinney and Ella Jones); Pawhuska girls (Cadence Dewitt, 15:17.73) and Micah McNeil); and Oklahoma Union girl (Lauryn Jackson).

Bartlesville softball

SEPT. 7: Lincoln Christian 7, Bartlesville 4 -- Home team Lincoln Christian scored five in the 2nd inning. But, Bartlesville bashed the ball with authority, led by Isabell Daniels and Kelsie Yales with a double and a single apiece. Also mashing two hits each were Chloe Robbins, Chelsea Goddard, Emerson Casey and Maddie Czaja. Bartlesville came up short in the clutch contact department, however, and left 10 runners stranded. Yales and Alison Rosson split pitching, with Yales suffering the loss.

Dewey softball

SEPT. 5: Verdigris 9, Dewey 3 -- Dewey saw its five-game winning streak snapped. Each Dewey pitcher, Kyla Overton and Reagan White, gave up a home run.

SEPT. 7: Oologah 8, Dewey 7 -- Heartbreak City in this one for Dewey (16-6), which dropped back-to-back losses for the first time since early in the season. Dewey led through five innings, 7-1. In the third inning, Londyn Bond crushed a grand slam and White added a solo homer to power Dewey to a sizable lead. But, Oologah rallied with seven runs in the final two innings. Emma Holland and Shawna Sutton each added a double for Dewey.

Wesleyan Christian School volleyball

SEPT. 7: WCS 3, Dewey 0 -- WCS rolled past Dewey to improve to 18-3 for the season. The Lady Mustangs are 5-1 in their last six matches. They are coached by Mariah Cooks. Their next scheduled home match is Sept. 15, when they will host a tourney.

Copan softball

SEPT. 5: Copan 15, Bluejacket 5 -- Copan continues to impress as it hones its attack for the upcoming postseason. Zoey Secondine belted a three-run inside-the-park homer to energize the offense. Elyzabeth Odum and Addie Hunter contributed three and two hits, respectively; Secondine also socked two hits. Kam Van hurled the pitching win with Kylee Cobb as her catcher. Copan doesn't play again until next week.
