Top Arizona high school girl's track and field performances: Week 9

The high school track and field season is here and in full swing. The state is coming off a historic year in which seven Arizona Interscholastic Association records were broken. During the 2024 season, The Arizona Republic is tracking the top performances each week as Arizona’s best athletes compete on the oval and in the field.

Here are the top girl’s performances from the ninth week of the season.

1. Brooklyn Montgomery, Gilbert Campo Verde, throws, Sr.: The BYU commit took down her personal best in the discus at the True Grit Invite held at Queen Creek High School, throwing 156-6 feet to build on her state lead in the event. Montgomery came into the season already No. 5 on the all-time list at 154-4. She now moves closer to the No. 4 athlete, Chandler’s Hannah Carson (159-4, 2011).

2. Camryn Delancey, Gilbert Highland, distance, So.: Ran a personal best of 5:02.14 to win the 1,600 meters at the True Grit Invite. The time takes the state lead from Phoenix Desert Vista and Arizona commit Brooklyn Hanania, who had just set it the day earlier. Delancey is close to becoming the first Highland runner under coach Dave Montgomery to go under 5 minutes in the 1,600 meters since Caroline McLeskey, who competes collegiately at BYU, did it multiple times in 2020.

3. Jezelle Santiago, Phoenix Sandra Day O’Connor, jumps, Sr.: Won the high jump at the Deer Valley district meet held at her home track, clearing 5-7 feet. Santiago is the first athlete in the state this outdoor season to jump over 5-6 – American Leadership Academy Queen Creek sophomore Kyana Williams went 5-8, but that was done in December outside of the high school season. It’s a new personal best for Santiago, one of the favorites for an Open Division state title with the postseason looming.

4. Anaya Quarles, Chandler, sprints, Sr.: Won the 400 meters at the Chandler City Meet, running a personal best of 56.46 seconds. It’s the first time that Quarles has gone under 57 seconds in her career. Quarles moves to No. 2 in the state in the event this season, just .17 seconds off the state leader. Coach Eric Richardson has the team shaping up at the right time.

5. Devyn Henderson, Phoenix North Canyon, sprints, Fr.: The star freshman, who broke 12 seconds in the 100 meters for the first time 10 days ago, ran 56.49 to win the 400 meters at the Paradise Valley District Championships. It’s the No. 3 time in the state, just behind Quarles. North Canyon has a rich history of producing elite track and field talent – Henderson is the latest athlete in that line.
