Here are the top 14 girls basketball players to watch in Manitowoc/Sheboygan areas

A brand-new high school girls basketball season tips off on Tuesday across Wisconsin with several players from Manitowoc and Sheboygan counties worth keeping an eye on.

Here are the 14 area players to watch in the 2023-24 season, in alphabetical order.

Taylor Brigham, jr., Sheboygan Lutheran

Brigham averaged 12.6 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 2.0 steals per game en route to being named second team all-Big East South as a sophomore. “Taylor does a little bit of everything for our team,” said Crusaders coach Tyler Thomas. “She is an extremely versatile player, as she will be asked to play many positions on the court this season. She is a great teammate and loves teaching our younger players about the game of basketball.”

Coryn Fromm, sr., Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah

A unanimous first team all-Big East North selection a season ago, Fromm averaged 19.2 ppg, 6.2 rebounds and 2.4 apg. Already a 1,000 point scorer for her career, Fromm was also honorable mention Division 5 by the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association. “I think she can take her game to a whole new level,” said Resorters coach Donny Kulow. “She has spent many hours in the gym working at her game. She can play multiple positions on the floor and can defend both inside and on the perimeter as well. We are also looking for to take more of a leadership role on this team.”

Payton Grenzer, sr., New Holstein

Grenzer was named second team all-Eastern Wisconsin Conference last season after she was third in the conference with 12 rpg. She also averaged 14.4 ppg.

Ady Ketterhagen, so., Oostburg

Ketterhagen was unanimous first team all-Big East South and has received NCAA DI scholarship offers from UW-Green Bay, UW-Milwaukee and South Dakota. She was also honorable mention Division 3 by the WBCA after averaging 17.2 ppg, 6.2 rpg, 4.0 apg and 4.0 spg. “I think Ady will be tasked with taking more of the other team's big/post as she plays very physical,” said Oostburg coach and Ketterhagen’s father Isaiah Ketterhagen. “We're looking for her to continue to show improvement in her outside game and the free throw line.”

Riley Ketterhagen, so., Oostburg

Like her twin sister, Riley was unanimous first team all-Big East South and has received NCAA DI scholarship offers from UW-Green Bay, UW-Milwaukee and South Dakota. She averaged 14.4 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 3.6 apg and 3.7 spg. “Expectations are for her to continue to take a leadership role within our team and understand how to handle being the focus of the other team's defensive assignments,” Isaiah Ketterhagen said. “I think Riley will be tasked with more of the guard defensive tasks as well as the continued improvement on the inside scoring and strength in her play. Another expectation is for her to get to the free throw line more and her percentage to be more consistent.”

Julie Koeppel, sr., Mishicot

A unanimous first team all-Big East North pick as a junior, Koeppel helped lead Mishicot to the WIAA Division 4 state tournament. She averaged 13.3 ppg and 9.4 rpg. “I just want Julie to play within herself and not feel like she has to carry the team on her back,” said first-year Mishicot coach Joel Kubsch. “She has plenty of back up behind her. I think in the short time I’ve gotten to know her the thing that jumps out at me is her determined mindset. She sets her sights on something and has her goals set and she will attack them with all she has.”

Marissa Mehlhorn, so., Manitowoc Lutheran

Mehlhorn returns for her sophomore season having been named first team all-Big East North a season ago. She averaged 14.8 ppg, 9.5 rpg and 3.6 spg.

Mallory Novy, sr., Reedsville

Novy, a first team all-Big East North selection, is expected to be a key piece for the Panthers after averaging 12.5 ppg and leading the conference with 9.8 rpg. “As the lone senior on the team she will be our leader this year,” said Reedsville coach Darrel Hanson. “I expect her to again lead the team in scoring and rebounding.  We are a very young team with only one senior and one junior on the roster, so Mallory is going to be the key to our success.”

Addison Schliewe, jr., Sheboygan Falls

A unanimous first team all-EWC choice last season, Schliewe averaged 16.6 ppg and led the conference with 12.6 rpg. “My expectations for her are to take on more of a leadership role this year and just do what she did for us last year,” said Falcons coach Paul Houwers. “She is very coachable and a great teammate. Her length and athleticism cause problems for our opponents every night. In 2022-2023 she was runner up for EWC Player of the Year. I would anticipate that she will be in the mix for that honor again this year. “

Halle Van Horn, sr., Random Lake

Van Horn averaged 17.5 ppg, 10.1 rpg in addition to 3.4 apg and 3.6 spg led her to being named a unanimous first team all-Big East South pick. She was also honorable mention Division 4 by the WBCA. “As our only returning starter, I expect Halle to step up into a leadership role and be more vocal this year,” said Rams coach Trina Van Horn. “Her ability to get to the rim off the dribble and finish will stress a lot of defenses and demand help situations that we can capitalize on as she finds the open shooters. She can hit the 3 and as she gets more comfortable taking those shots will open up her drive game that much more.”

Addy Verhagen, jr., Sheboygan Lutheran

Verhagen led the Big East South with 4.2 apg while also averaging 14.4 ppg and 2.9 spg. She was also honorable mention Division 4 by the WBCA. “Addy is our floor general and main ball handler,” Thomas said. “She loves to compete. She has worked super hard in the off-season on her game and has improved her strength in the weight room.”

Brynn Wisse, sr., Oostburg

The forward was a second team all-Big East pick as a junior when she averaged 12.3 ppg, 6.9 rpg, 2.1 apg and 2.9 spg. “Brynn is one of our captains this year - we're expecting some really good leadership from her in her play and her quiet demeanor of leading by example,” Isaiah Ketterhagen said. “Her play is a lot louder than her personality and that's something we really are going to need from her this year.  I truly think she is a 1st Teamer and she's got the capability to be a double-double machine this year.  Our expectation is that her shot is even more consistent and she's going to give us the ability to stretch the floor and give us gaps because players/coaches have to know where she is at all times.”

Claire Zipperer, sr., Valders

A second team all-EWC pick last season, Zipperer averaged 14 ppg and 8 rpg. She is the Vikings lone returning starter.

Maria Zylstra, sr., Sheboygan Christian

The Eagles point guard averaged 16.9 ppg, 5.3 rpg, and 4.0 spg en route to being named second team all-Big East South.
