Who are the top-10 high school football defensive backs in the Gadsden area

The high school football season is quickly approaching.

With games starting on August 24 and practice starting for many teams on July 31st, the Gadsden Times will be releasing its series of positional rankings leading up to the first snap of the season.

Here is the top 10 defensive backs in the Gadsden area:

10. Alex Davis

Sardis, senior

Why chosen: From the strong safety position Davis recorded 43 tackles and three sacks for the Lions last season.

9. Logan Anderson

Fyffe, Senior

Why Chosen: An all around athlete who was an All-State selection at running back and nominee for 2A back of the year in 2022. At 6-foot-2 and 200-pounds he is a force in the defensive backfield.

8. Alex Johnson

Cherokee County, Senior

Why chosen: Johnson helped Cherokee County reach the AHSAA Class 4A State Championship game, while earning first team all-region honors.

7. Elijah Kelley

Boaz, junior

Why chosen: Kelley had 60 total tackles last year to go along with six interceptions.

6. Luke Gilbert

Pisgah, senior

Why chosen: Gilbert had 62 tackles including seven for a loss last year to go with three interceptions. Gilbert will be a four-year starter for the Eagles.

5. Anderson Morgan

Hokes Bluff, Junior

Why Chosen: Morgan recorded four interceptions, leading the way for the Hokes Bluff defense last year.

4. Drake Dupree

Coosa Christian

Why Chosen: Dupree led the way with 11 pass breakups for a Conquerors squad that made a AHSAA Class 1A semifinal run last season. He added 65 tackles, two forced fumbles and two interceptions.

3. Jaxon Hamby

West End, Sophomore

Why Chosen: A second-team All-State selection with six interceptions and three fumble recoveries, scoring on three takeaways. Hamby also finished with 65 tackles and made the All-County and Region teams.

2. Jakob Kelley

Pisgah, senior

Why Chosen: Kirby had 69 tackles and three interceptions. He broke up 13 passes as well. He will be a four year starter for the Eagles.

1. Dre Kirkpatrick

Gadsden City, senior

Why Chosen: Kirkpatrick recorded 69 tackles from the safety position last year. He added a tackle for loss with three interceptions and 16 pass breakups. Kirkpatrick holds offers from Alabama, Auburn, Missouri and other Power 5 programs.
