Top 10 football teams in the Texas Panhandle after Week 8

Week 8 is up. Let's take a look at the best teams in the Texas Panhandle.

1. Canadian

Another week, another dominant showing by the Wildcats. This time it was a 63-14 drudging of Spearman. It seems unlikely that Canadian will lose in the regular season and is the area's best bet to make it to state this year.

2. Stratford

The Elks faced their toughest test of the year Friday night on the road against Panhandle and found themselves down two possessions in the first quarter. No problem for the Elks as they won 34-24. Stratford likely won the district title with this one and looks likely to extend its streak of perfect regular-season records to three years.

3. West Plains

No problem once again for the Wolves as they knocked off Levelland 68-13. They have 2-5 Perryton this week and 3-4 Borger in the final week of the regular season. The Wolves are looking like district champions in their second year of existence.

4. Bushland

The Falcons are big movers this week, going up two spots after another blowout win. They hung 70 on River Road and have looked phenomenal all year. The only team that knocked them off in the regular season last year was Shallowater (3-4), their opponent this week. Should Bushland win, it could set up a de facto district title game against Dalhart the week after.

5. Sunray

The Bobcats should be very proud of how far they've come the past few years. The standard has been set that a game in which they win 34-12 after a slow start, we move them down a spot because we expect even more. Sunray is 7-1 and 1-0 in district and still the overwhelming favorite to win their district. Top five in the area ain't bad.

6. Dalhart

The Golden Wolves have one loss on the year, by three points to Borger. Yes, Shallowater is having a down year by their lofty standards, but for the Golden Wolves to come away with the win is an enormous statement for where the program is right now.

7. Panhandle

The Panthers led Stratford early and had plenty of moments to be proud of. There's no shame in losing to Stratford and, as such, they can't be dropped too much. They'll look to bounce back against West Texas Stinnett this week.

8. Olton

The Mustangs put up an amazing effort against Sundown, coming away with a 39-7 victory. Olton has just the one loss on the year and is looking like a good bet to win their district.

9. Canyon

The Eagles won a crucial district contest against Hereford, pulling away big in the fourth quarter. They have just one loss on the season with the Week 3 defeat against West Plains. The Goat Game is up this week and a win over Randall would put Canyon in a prime position to take the district championship.

10. Muleshoe

The Mules were off this week, but they've dominated every one of their opponents aside from a one-sided loss to Bushland. They'll get River Road this week with Shallowater and Dalhart to follow.
