Tommy Kahnle on the comeback trail. When will he rejoin the Yankees' bullpen?

TAMPA, Fla. – Based on his rehab schedule, Tommy Kahnle might rejoin the Yankees’ bullpen in about 10 days.

Coming back from a shoulder ailment, Kahnle “felt really good’’ following a scoreless inning Wednesday for Class A Tampa, the start of his minor league rehab stint.

Kahnle’s next scheduled outing is Saturday with Class A Tampa, after which he’ll transfer to Class AA Somerset.

As previously suggested by Yankees manager Aaron Boone, Kahnle said he’d probably have five total rehab outings before he’s activated, which translates to on, or about, May 20.

Prior to Friday’s series opener against the Rays at Tampa Bay, the Yankees activated right-hander Nick Burdi from the injured list due to hip inflammation, having optioned Toms River right-hander Ron Marinaccio to Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Marinaccio has minor league options remaining, whereas Michael Tonkin does not, making Marinaccio - who also pitched a scoreless inning Thursday - the move to accomodate Burdi's arrival.

"Confident he’ll be an important part of us moving forward,'' Boone said of optioning Marinaccio, with a 1.42 ERA in nine outings (12.2 innings) this season.

"He was upset, understandably,'' Boone said of Marinaccio learning he was being sent down again. "The biggest thing is to try and control what you can do between the lines, regardless of where you're at. And he will.''

At the Yankees’ player development complex, Kahnle – wearing a Penny Hardaway Orlando Magic basketball jersey – spoke earlier Friday about the Yankees bullpen’s early success.

“They’ve been great, top to bottom, everyone’s been doing really well,’’ Kahnle said of a relief corps that leads all MLB bullpens with a 2.25 ERA.

“(Closer) Clay (Holmes) is absolutely shutting the door,’’ said Kahnle. “We just need our bullpen to cover what the starters give us, and we’re going to hit the ball.’’

Tommy Kahnle's comeback trail

Kahnle is due to pitch every other day through the balance of his rehab. The right-hander felt his “command was good’’ during his first outing, which included two strikeouts.

He felt his four-seam fastball and change-up were good, as well as two sliders he threw.

“I tried to go back door with a sinker, threw one to the backstop,’’ Kahnle said of his one misstep. “Also a good time to try it, I guess.’’

In the final season of a two-year, $11 million contract, Kahnle ended last season on the IL due to right shoulder inflammation, which delayed his start to spring training.

Kahnle was further set back by soreness late in camp, but he’s had no issues since resuming bullpens in early April, after a short rest period.

During his Tampa rehab, Kahnle has been in the company of fellow relievers Lou Trivino (Tommy John surgery rehab) and Scott Effross (back surgery), who could be midseason bullpen additions.

“I’ve become close with them, so it’s nice having them here,’’ said Kahnle, who has also enjoyed mentoring the younger pitchers in the Yankees system and answering their pitching questions.

“And I’ve got them some nice donuts and Chick-fil-A,’’ Kahnle said of catering his rehab assignments.

Rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, switch-hitting center fielder Jasson Dominguez “looks good,’’ according to Kahnle.

Dominguez is about 10 days from beginning a rehab assignment and could be ready to play at Yankee Stadium by late June or early July.

On Friday, the Yankees transferred infielder Oswald Peraza’s rehab assignment from Tampa to Somerset, and Peraza (shoulder inflammation) could be big-league ready by late May.

The Yankees also claimed right-hander Colby White off waivers Thursday from the Rays, and assigned him to Somerset.

A former sixth-round draft pick, White, 25, struggled earlier this season but has a 2.83 ERA in 91 minor league games, mostly in relief, with 167 strikeouts and 58 walks in 111.1 innings.
