Tom Brady in Las Vegas? Raiders coach Josh McDaniels says future Hall of Famer 'at peace' with retirement

Could Tom Brady renege on retirement one more time?

And possibly join the Las Vegas Raiders?

Josh McDaniels, the Raiders coach who was Brady’s longtime offensive coordinator with the New England Patriots, believes otherwise.

McDaniels essentially canceled any Brady-to-the-Raiders speculation during an interview on NFL Network at the scouting combine on Tuesday.

“I think he’s at peace,” McDaniels said of Brady, who retired for the second time on Feb. 1.

“We’re both at stages of our life where there’s other things beyond football that we have to consider,” McDaniels added.

“Tom has been a great father, a great friend, a great player for a long time. He’s going to do what he needs to do right now that’s in the best interest for him and his family.”

Let’s look back at Brady to Raiders rumors

Brady and the Raiders have been linked several times since he finished his NFL career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, winning his seventh Super Bowl in 2021.

UFC president Dana White said in Aug. 2022 that he personally worked on a deal that would have placed both Brady and his favorite tight end Rob Gronkowski together with the Raiders in 2020. But former Raiders coach Jon Gruden nixed the deal.

“I worked to put that deal together for Brady and Gronk to come to the Raiders,” White said during ESPN’s broadcast of UFC 278. “It was almost a done deal. And at the last minute, Gruden blew the deal up and said that he didn't want him and all hell broke loose, man. It was crazy.

“And Brady was already looking at houses. It wasn't said yet that Gronk was going to be coming. So Las Vegas would have had Brady and Gronk the year that the Bucs won the Super Bowl except Gruden blew the deal up.”

Earlier this month, Raiders tight end Darren Waller also confirmed the rumor.

“I’ve heard it from multiple sources that I respect and I’ve been close to,” Waller told Forbes on Feb. 15. “They’re like, ‘Yeah, Brady to the Raiders was a lock.’”

Tom Brady announces his retirement

Exactly one year to the date of his first retirement, Brady retired again.

This time “for good,” as he said on a video posted to his social media.

“I know the process was a pretty big deal last time, so when I woke up this morning, I figured I'd just press record and let you guys know first,” Brady said in a video on Twitter on Feb. 1.

“I won't be long-winded. You only get one super emotional retirement essay, and I used mine up last year, so really thank you guys so much to every single one of you for supporting me.”

What do the Raiders do at quarterback?

McDaniels and the Raiders must consider another option at quarterback.

Longtime Raiders starter Derek Carr is reportedly at the NFL combine this week to meet with at least three other teams: The Jets, Saints and Panthers, according to ESPN.

The Raiders could consider trading for Packers star Aaron Rodgers to pair with star receiver Davante Adams.

Besides a Rodgers trade, the Raiders could turn to free agency where 49ers starter Jimmy Garoppolo is an appealing option.
