Tolan, Longbella finish in top 10 at Wisconsin Amateur Championship

Jul. 23—A pair of local golfers finished in the top 10 at the Wisconsin Amateur Championship on Thursday in Brookfield.

Eau Claire's Matt Tolan came in seventh at the state's top amateur tournament, and Chippewa Falls' Thomas Longbella was right behind in eighth place at Westmoor Country Club.

Hartland's Piercen Hunt won the championship, finishing 1-under to be the only golfer to beat par at the tournament.

Tolan, an Eau Claire North graduate, shot a 71 on Thursday — his second-best round of the tournament — to finish 11 over par. Back-to-back birdies on the fifth and sixth holes were the highlight of his final round.

Longbella finished 13-over after a final-round 75. Last year's champion couldn't overcome three bogeys on the front nine, but still managed to finish in the top 10 for a fourth consecutive year.

Both Tolan and Longbella are former champions at the Wisconsin Amateur Championship.

Spring Valley's Tyler Leach surged 12 spots up the leaderboard to finish in a tie for 37th. The Marquette golfer carded a 75, his best round of the tournament.

The next major tournament of the summer, the PGA's Wisconsin State Open, is set for August 16-18 at Blackwolf Run in Kohler.
