USA take fourth-straight men's basketball gold, but it is a far cry from class of 1992: what you missed overnight at Tokyo 2020

Shock horror, America have won the basketball. Team USA’s men took their fourth consecutive Olympic gold in this competition with an 87-82 win over France in the final, the team who inflicted a surprise defeat in their opening game.

It is America’s 16th gold in 19 Olympics appearances, but as with much of their tournament they were solid rather than spectacular.

It is a far cry from the Dream Team days of 1992, the first Olympics to feature active professional players in the USA team. That squad bestrode two triumphant eras, with the 80s' biggest stars (Magic Johnson, Larry Bird) teaming up with the talent that would take the game global in the 90s (Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley).

This summer the big names opted to stay at home. LeBron James preferred to concentrate on promoting the not-so-eagerly awaited sequel to Space Jam. Steph Curry, Anthony Davis and Kawhi Leonard also missed out, leaving Portland Trailblazers point guard Damian Lillard as the expected main man.

In fact it has been the evergreen Brooklyn Net Kevin Durant leading the American charge. He top scored again in this final with 29 points and secured the win with two free throws, after the French had reduced the lead to three points in the closing seconds.

It was an appropriately low-key conclusion to the USA’s tournament. The expectation of perfection has weighed heavily on the players whose celebrations were of a job dutifully done rather than the glorious high point of a career.

The tournament as a whole has suggested the rest of the world is catching up with America in a sport they have dominated for generations. Although assistant coach Jay Wright may have been over-egging it after the game with his claim that “USA Basketball head coach is the hardest job in the world.”

Nelly Korda holds on for women's golf to add to family success

The Korda family has a gold medal for their ever-expanding sporting empire. Nelly, the world’s No 1 female, came through in a dramatic finale at Kasumigaseki Country Club to make it an American double.

After emulating Xander Schauffele, Korda was hugged by elder sister Jessica, who shot her own brilliant 64 but finished down the field.

Father Petr - tennis’s 1998 Australia Open champion - and mother Regina Rajchrtova - who represented Czech Republic on tennis return to the Games in 1998 - and brother Seb - who reached the fourth round of Wimbledon earlier this year - were all watching from afar and the nerves would have been jangling in a chaotic confusion.

Korda, 23, saw her three-shot overnight advantage rubbed out on the front nine, but in impervious fashion, she rebuilt the same cushion early in the back nine.

“I was very frustrated with myself [after the double-bogey on the seventh],” she said. “I was not happy at all, but I told myself there's still a lot of golf left. I'm very proud of how I handled the round after that.”

In the closing stages, it became a case of hanging on as Japan’s Mone Inami and Kiwi Lydia Ko charged in with 65s - as well as surviving the distractions of a weather delay. Korda’s 69 was sufficient for a 17-under total and a one-shot win, with Inami relegating Ko to bronze on the first extra-hole.

This was Korda’s third title in four events during a run featuring her major breakthrough at the Women’s USPGA and it clearly establishes her as the overwhelming favourite for the Women’s Open at Carnoustie in two weeks’ time.

“With sports it’s so different because you’re constantly looking ahead for your next event,” Korda said. “It never really gets to kind of sink in. ... But when I do look back, it’s just crazy.”

Korda is a modest soul and it was left to Jessica to give the achievement its perspective. “This is just kind of like almost legend status as a golfer, period, male or female,” Jessica said. “It’s tough to win out here and she makes it look easy, but those girls are good. So for her to be doing, it’s insane to me. This is like total GOAT (Greatest Of All Time) status to me.”

Certainly the International Golf Federation will be delighted that another high-profile player prevailed. It was anything but a smooth build-up to the sport’s second Games since being re-included in the Olympics after a 112-year gap.

The pandemic and the likes of Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka and Tyrrell Hatton all withdrawing - not to mention Team GB’s Charley Hull and Georgia Hall - was depressing enough even before the 11th hour positive tests that forced world No 1 Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau to sit it out.

But, as ever, the sport itself provided the reason why the ancient game deserves its place. Korda scattered the stardust to lend emphatic proof.

“I’m proud of golf,” said Annika Sorenstam, the president of the International Golf Federation. “What everybody has done to make this happen. This is only the second time and the Olympics has a long history. To come so far already and establish ourselves. Golf showcases so many different things that other sports like to be. We’re role models in lots of ways, the way these players handle themselves, the way the sport goes about things, I’m proud of it.”

Jepchir wins women's marathon; GB's Stephanie Davis finishes 39th

Kenya's Peres Jepchirchir won the Olympic women's marathon in Sapporo on Saturday, outduelling compatriot Brigid Kosgei in the final minutes and claiming her country's second consecutive gold medal in the event.

Kosgei took silver and Molly Seidel of the United States, competing in just her third marathon after moving up from shorter distances, claimed bronze.

Kenyans Kosgei, the world record holder, and world champion Ruth Chepngetich had been favourites to win gold on Saturday.

But it was two-time world half marathon champion Jepchirchir who came out on top after breaking out of a virtual tie with Kosgei at the 40km mark where she decided to make her move.

"When I was there I said, wow, I'm going to make it. So I pushed the pace because I knew I was going to win," Jepchirchir said.

"I'm so, so happy because we win as Kenya, first and second ... I'm happy, for my family, happy for my country Kenya for supporting us."

Victory for the USA!

Thom Gibbs is courtside:

"Stop all the clocks. Stone all the crows. Do not rub your eyes. America have won the basketball. They take the men's gold medal with an 87-82 win against France.

"France were game and reduced the lead to a mere three points on a couple of occasions in the final quarter but every time they came close to taking a lead Team USA found a different gear.

"It's been a harder tournament than many expected for them, with their opening defeat to France a huge shock. They were sloppy to the end here, turning the ball over needlessly with mere seconds remaining when they could have held onto possession to see out the game. Two made free throws put the French within one score again with 10 seconds to go. They intentionally fouled to stop the clock seconds later and Kevin Durant made two free throws of his own to finish the scoring.

"An appropriately low-key conclusion to the men's tournament: its best player settling it, without any of the flair or dominance we expect from an American basketball team."

USA up by only three with ten seconds of play left in the final quarter.

04:07 AM

Could France turn it around?

Here's Thom Gibbs:

"Some mild suggestion that we may have a game on our hands at the basketball final. Two missed three for the USA and French points in reply took them to the third quarter break just eight point behind. There's a needless turnover to American hands after a needless travelling foul and the lead is back to double digits soon afterwards. Still, France are sticking around. Six behind now, six minutes 28 seconds left of the clock. Surely not?"

Severe storm warning temporarily suspends play in the final round of the women's golf

What timing! The horn goes off at the Kasumigaseki Country Club and all players return to the clubhouse.

Hopefully the storm will move through quickly; we've got just two more holes to finish off for the final group, but it's wide open. We're expecting a decision on when play will resume in about half an hour.

Korda leads on -17, Inami is on -16, Ahosk and Ko are on -15, and Green is on -14.

Halftime in the basketball: USA 44-39 France

Here's Thom Gibbs at the Saitama Super Arena:

"It will not shock you to learn that Team USA have the lead at the half-time print of the men's basketball final.

"It's not been a procession, France have looked capable when moving the ball at speed, and strong in the paint. But they don't have an answer for Kevin Durant, like every other team here.

"Whenever America have looked in mild peril he has been the go-to guy and leads his team with 21 points at the half. It's 44-39, so not done and dusted yet, but equally it seems possible that USA will not squander this lead at any point from hereon in."

Men's basketball, now France 15-15 USA in the first quarter

Thom Gibbs is courtside in Tokyo:

"Here we go in the men's basketball gold medal game in the Saitama Super Arena, which has comfortably the busiest press section I've seen anywhere at these Games, and a growing smattering of volunteers taking up the empty seats. More power to them! It's been a long two weeks of politely explaining to foreigners where the toilets are.

"It's the USA vs France this morning. Gee, wonder who the favourites are? Still, France beat America in the first group stage game here and it's a big dunk from Utah Jazz centre Rudy Golbert, of France, to open the scoring. They'll need to stop the evergreen Kevin Durant, who has been predictably fantastic in this tournament for the USA."

Sports nutritionist under investigation

The sport nutritionist who has claimed credit for helping to guide Italian sprinter Lamont Jacobs to Olympic glory is reportedly at the centre of a police investigation into the illegal distribution of anabolic steroids.

Jacobs shocked the athletics world when he raced to victory in the blue-riband 100 metres race in Tokyo on Sunday in a European record time of 9.80 secs. He added to his medal haul on Friday when he helped the Italian team to gold in the 4x100 metres sprint relay final.

Giacomo Spazzini, a professional bodybuilder who runs a fitness training and sports nutrition business, basked in Jacobs’ reflected glory immediately after his Tokyo triumph.

According to The Times, Spazzini posted a video last year in which he outlined how he was going to help the athlete break the 10-second barrier for the 100 metres.

The newspaper says that it has seen police documents which show a link between Spazzini and a probe by authorities in Milan called ‘Operation Muscle Bound’ into allegations of fraud, the use or supply of drugs to alter athletic performance and the handling of stolen goods.

Jacobs’ agent this week said that his client had parted company with Spazzini after discovering that the investigation had been launched. Marcello Magnani told The Times: “The investigation has never touched Marcell and, therefore,we have no information about it.” He added that any question of Jacobs using illicit substances was “insane.”

There is no suggestion Jacobs has acted improperly. Spazzini could not be contacted on Friday night for comment.

Hello again

And welcome to our rolling, live coverage from Day 15 of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. The day's action has kicked off already with the women's marathon, which began at 10pm BST. The race - as well as the walking events and the men's marathon - was moved first to the city of Sapporo to escape the worst of Tokyo's summer heat and humidity and also moved earlier in the day to have it in cooler conditions.

Some of the competitors in the Olympic marathon field have already had a blast of furnace-type heat and humidity at the 2019 World Championships in Doha. That race was a midnight run and still hit 88 degrees (31 C), with a heat index was 105 (40 C). It led to nearly 30 runners not getting to the finish line as Ruth Chepngetich of Kenya captured gold.

She's among the favorites at the Tokyo Olympics. There could be quite a few DNFs given the conditions. There are three Britons taking part: Jess Piasecki, Stephanie Twell and Stephanie Davis.

Elsewhere in the day we'll be covering the following events in detail, with medal hopes for Great Britain, who currently sit fourth in the medal table.

Coming up in the next couple of hours we'll have updates from the women's golf, the men's basketball final and Tom Daley, who takes part in the 10m individual platform semi-final at 2am and, if he gets through, the final.

Then, at 6am there is Galal Yafai in the men's flyweight final, before the modern pentathlon gets under way and more equestrianism, too.

A bit later on there's more from the Izi velodrome where Ethan Hayter go for gold in the men's madison, hoping to follow in the footsteps of Laura Kenny and Katie Archibold who took gold in the women's version on Friday.

Then the athletics kicks off in the Tokyo evening, with the 4x400m relays, the men's 1,500m, the women's 10km and the high jump final, all of which have British interest.
