Tigers of the Game: The efforts of Broome and Green lead Auburn to first SEC win

It was not an aesthetically pleasing win, but the No. 23 Auburn Tigers got the job done on Wednesday night.

Auburn’s Johni Broome succeeded on a layup opportunity with 1:14 remaining in regulation to give the Tigers the 59-58 lead. Wendell Green Jr. then followed suit by scoring on a breakaway layup to solidify the 61-58 win over Florida at Neville Arena.

Auburn saw its offensive production rise in the second half, as the Tigers improved its shooting from 28.6% to 48.1% in the final 20 minutes. Broome, Green, and Jaylin Williams each turned their game up in the second half, as each scored at least ten points to close the game.

The efforts of Green and Broome were instrumental in Auburn pulling out a late win over Florida, which makes way for them to add to their “Tigers of the Game” vote total.

Here is a look at who writers Taylor JonesJ.D. McCarthy, and River Wells voted for as their “Tigers of the Game” following Auburn’s win over Florida.

Green did not get off to a great start, but he more than made up for it.

He connected on a three-pointer in the waning seconds of the first half to trim Florida’s lead to 26-23 at halftime. He then scored 10 points over the first five minutes of the second half to keep the Tigers in it. To put the icing on the cake, Green scored the games final points on a layup as time expired.

Green ended the game with 14 points, which marks the ninth time in 12 games that he has reached double figures in points.

He was also instrumental in Auburn earning the win, as he scored the game-winning basket with 1:14 to go in the game to put Auburn ahead, 59-58.

It marks the second time this season that Broome has recorded a double-double this season. He scored 18 points and reeled in 13 rebounds in Auburn’s 89-65 win over Winthrop on Nov. 15.
