WIAA State Tournament
MADISON - De Pere’s Nicholas Balthazor, who is the No. 2 seed in the WIAA Division 1 state individual boys tennis tournament, got off to a good start Thursday in pursuit of the singles title.
Balthazor, after an opening-round bye, defeated Justin Hutchcroft of Verona 6-0, 6-1 to advance to Friday’s third round, where he will meet Alexander Bo of Middleton.
Kimberly’s Aiden Meixl, who is the No. 8 seed, had a first-round bye and then beat Glenn Conway of Madison LaFollette 6-0, 6-1 in the second round. He will face Nolan Shaub in the third round.
Alex Thomas of Notre Dame, who defeated Leyton Batchelder of Fond du Lac in the first round 6-4, 6-0, lost to Bo 6-2, 6-0 in the second round.
Jason Stinski of Oshkosh West, who defeated David Murphy of Neenah 6-3, 6-1 in the first round, lost to Everett Reid of Madison West 6-2, 6-0 in the second round.
Notre Dame’s Matt Gugluizza defeated Oak Creek’s Nil Massaneda 6-4, 7-5 in the first round then lost to Ethan Bo of Middleton in the second round 6-0, 6-0.
Others not making it out of the first round in Division 1 included Logan Haferman of Appleton West, who lost to Yancine Ferjani of Greendale 6-3 6-2; Colin Belton of D.C. Everest, who lost to Everett Reid of Madison West 6-1, 6-2; Chase Colucci of West De Pere, who lost to Andrew Davies of Mukwonago 6-2, 6-2; Carl Hein of Neenah, who lost to Christos Davos of Westosha Central 3-6, 6-2, 10-3.
In Division 1 doubles, Notre Dame’s Aidan Burich and Mason Olson are into the second round after defeating Nathan Darrow and Karan Mandepudi of West De Pere 6-0, 6-1. De Pere’s Kegan McDonough and Tudor Cristescu defeated Oshkosh West’s Jack Rasmussen and Nyle Dar in the first round 6-2, 6-1; Shawano’s George Buerman and Tristan Sheldon defeated Simon Kuhlow and Noah Freeman of Madison LaFollette 6-2, 2-6, 13-11, and Neenah’s Satchel Moss and Ben Kotchen beat Hayden McDougal and Dominic McDougal of Union Grove 6-0, 6-0.
Dropping first-round matches were Brady Hildreth and Andrew Werner of Neenah to Isaac Basar and Nate Christensen of Mukwonago 6-2, 6-2; Eli Reider and Andrew Nhan of Kimberly to Michael Ruiz and Max Dugan of Kettle Moraine 6-3, 6-2; Oshkosh West’s Hans Larson and Ryan Jorgensen to Oregon’s Gordon Zheng and Charlie Barnish 7-6 (5), 6-4; Notre Dame’s Pablo Cuene and Zeb Zifferblatt to Menomonee Falls’ Ben Pomroy and Miles Seder 6-2, 6-1; Manitowoc’s Ayden Knuth and Cohen Newberg to Eau Claire Memorial’s Gavin Sorensen and Seth Roosevelt 6-3, 7-5.
In Division 2 singles, winners included Ben McGuire of St. Mary’s Springs over Oliver Boyd of University School-Milwaukee 4-6, 6-2, 10-2; Wesley Auth of St. Mary Catholic over Justin Brehm of East Troy 1-6, 6-3, 10-5; Owen Plate of Plymouth over Lake Segel of St. John’s Northwestern Military Academy 6-1, 6-2; Xavier’s Nana Kofi Norman over Owen Benck of Portage 6-4, 6-1; Plymouth’s Jaren Balthus over Kohler’s Nolan Villwock 6-4, 6-1; and Xavier’s Josh Horak over Brookfield Academy’s Michael Boucher 7-6 (5), 6-4.
In Division 2 doubles, Xavier’s Nick Bittner and Nate Hall received a first-round bye. They will face Joey Darrow and Marko Gajic of University School-Milwaukee in the second round Friday.
Xavier’s Sean Utrie and Mark Steinlage defeated Viroqua’s Gavin Goss and Owen King 7-6 (1), 6-3.
Getting knocked out in the first round were Grant Bergstrom and Harry Bergstrom, losing 6-4, 6-0 to Mason Robinson and Mac Yackee of Edgewood; Brady Ryan and Max Reinthaler of Kohler, who lost to Cade Visner and Timothy Serb of Catholic Memorial 6-4, 6-2; Gianni Frausto and Cavin Baltus of Plymouth, who lost to Alex Schmidt and Luke Yoon of New Berlin Eisenhower 6-4, 6-3; Ryan McEvoy and Gaven Marx of Plymouth, who lost 6-2, 6-3 to Shane Willenbrgin and Mitchell Fortney of Aquinas; and Griffin Montes and Chaz Hoell of Kohler, who lost to Sam Dickinson and Patrick Gundersen of Aquinas 6-2, 4-6, 10-7.
SOFTBALL
Division 1 sectional final
Kaukauna 10, Green Bay Preble 0
PULASKI - The two-time defending Division 1 state champion Ghosts scored five runs in the bottom of the third inning to take control in the victory over the Hornets to advance to state.
The win was the 77th in a row for the Ghosts.
Taryn Christopher had a two-run double and Jozy Ebben had a two-run single in the big inning. Another run scored on a ground out.
Summer Schmidt and Reagan Millard both hit home runs for the Ghosts.
Division 3 sectional final
Mishicot 6, Peshtigo 0
GILLETT - Cora Stodola pitched a five-hit shutout and struck out 10 batters to lead Mishicot to the sectional title and a trip to state.
Katelyn Callahan was 3-for-3, including a triple, drove in three runs and scored two runs. Karsyn Krause drove in two runs and Cora Nelson had two hits.
Nevaeh Russell had two hits for Peshtigo.
Division 4 sectional final
Iola-Scandinavia 3, Algoma 2
ALGOMA - The Thunderbirds exploded for three runs in the top of the seventh and held off the Wolves in a sectional final to earn their second consecutive trip to the state tournament.
Macie Zimmerman had Iola-Scandinavia locked down for six innings, but allowed two home runs in the decisive seventh. Maddie Much and Jaelyn Sivertson went deep for the Thunderbirds.
Much finished 3-for-4 at the plate with a triple and the home run, while Brooklyn Berrens and Clara Koles were 2-for-4.
Zimmerman had the hot bat for Algoma, going 3-for-4 with a home run, while Ryley Zimmerman was 2-for-4.
The game was scoreless until the sixth, when Algoma plated a run. Iola-Scandinavia countered with its big seventh inning.
Although she took the loss, Zimmerman had eight strikeouts.
Much got the win, allowing just one earned run on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
Division 5 sectional finals
Assumption 5, Seneca 0
NEW LISBON - Ava Schill allowed two hits and struck out 12 batters to pitch the Royals to the victory and a berth in the state tournament.
Claire Nelson had three hits and two RBIs, while Cristin Casey and Anna Schooley each had two hits.
Assumption improves its record to 19-2.
Oakfield 7, Belmont 5
OAKFIELD - Tied at five through five innings, the Oaks scored the go-ahead runs in the sixth on a bunt single by Taneal Tadman followed by a base hit to left field from Alyvia Robinson.
Belmont plated the first two runs of the game in the top of the second inning when Addison McNett walked and Payton Johnsen reached on an error, with both Braves coming around to score. Likewise, in the third, the first two batters - Reese Runde and Lainey Riechers - both reached base for Belmont and scored to go up 4-0. Finally, after a 1-2-3 fourth inning, the Braves took advantage of an Oakfield error to lead off the fifth which allowed Rylee Rogers to score.
The Oaks put three runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third, all with two outs, to cut the deficit to 4-3. Alexis Liebenow led off with a walk. Rhyan Vielbig sacrficed Liebenow to second base, Tadman reached on an error, and Robinson doubled to bring them both in, later scoring herself on a base hit by Stella Hofman.
In the fourth, Oakfield pulled off some more two-out magic when Vielbig started a chain of three consecutive singles. Kaitlyn Volbright followed Vielbig and Tadman knocked in both runners to give the Oaks a 5-4 lead, briefly.
To begin the sixth, Liebenow got the rally going for Oakfield with a single. Volbright and Tadman dropped back-to-back bunts to reach base, which loaded them up for Robinson who delivered in the clutch.
Aly Lamonska pitched a complete game with six strikeouts to earn the victory and help send the Oaks back to state.

Division 1 regional finals
Kimberly 9, Appleton East 0
KIMBERLY - Brayden Deering tossed a one-hitter, walking three and striking out 10, to lead the Papermakers past the Patriots in regional final action.
Kimberly will face De Pere in Tuesday’s sectional semifinal at Pulaski.
Leading hitters for the Papermakers included Evan Olson, who was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Kale Twombly was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Max Kalk was 2-for-3 with a double, home run and four RBIs. Brady Koester was 2-for-3 with a double, homer and three RBIs, and Ryan Csida was 2-for-3 with a double.
Kimberly pounded out 13 hits.
Appleton North 8, Ashwaubenon 3
ASHWAUBENON - Ben Tomassetti and Ben Isom pitched the Lightning to the regional final victory.
Tomassetti pitched four innings to get the win. He struck out one. Isom pitched three innings and struck out five.
Caden Popp, Brock Salm and Alex Ramus each had two hits for Appleton North. Salm had two doubles and Ramus had three RBIs.
De Pere 3, Bay Port 1
SUAMICO - Easton Arendt pitched a complete game, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out seven to lead the Redbirds to the win over the Pirates.
Bay Port took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a single by Cole Bensen that scored Cal Casper.
De Pere bounced back with three runs in the third off Bay Port pitcher Ethan Plog.
Axel Donaldson and Arendt both singled with Javin Gauthier tying the game on a fielder’s choice. Landon Raygo doubled to score Gauthier. Raygo then stole third and scored on a throwing error.
Stevens Point 5, Wausau West 2
STEVENS POINT - The Panthers defeated the Warriors in a regional final matchup.
Ty Rechner earned his seventh win of the season to remain undefeated for SPASH after four innings pitched, allowing just two hits while striking out six. Josh Opiola came in for relief to finish the final three innings, giving up six hits and both runs for West to go with three strikeouts.
Devin Mrozek, Ben Fonti and Jaxon Stetler each went 2-for-3 at the plate. Stetler and Braylen Nystrom both knocked a double for the Panthers.
SPASH is 23-1 overall and will next take on River Falls on Tuesday in Marshfield for a sectional semifinal.
Hortonville 11, West De Pere 1
HORTONVILLE - The Polar Bears made short work of the Phantoms, scoring in every inning.
Hortonville led 3-0 after one, 5-0 after two and 7-1 after three en route to the regional final win. The Polar Bears will face Appleton North, an 8-3 winner over Ashwaubenon, in Tuesday’s sectional semifinal at Pulaski.
Turner Kuhnke had the hot bat for Hortonville, going 2-for-4 with a pair of homers and four RBIs. Thomas Burns was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Camden Kuhnke added two hits.
Burns scattered four hits and one earned run in five innings of work as he walked two and struck out five.

Rhinelander 1, Medford 0
RHINELANDER - Ava Lamers scored the lone goal of the match for the Hodags.
Rhinelander had 22 shots on goal with Medford keeper Sophia Brunner tallying 13 saves.
Medford recorded five shots on goal with Rhinelander’s keeper stopping two of the attempts.
Division 4 regional semifinals
St. Mary Catholic 3, Sevastopol 0
NEENAH - After 80 minutes of scoreless play, the Zephyrs put away three goals in the first period of extra time to secure the win.
Audrey Wanless broke through the defense and slotted a ball in the corner of the net to put SMC up 1-0 just 36 seconds in to the overtime.
Less than three minutes later, Wanless received a through ball from Audrey Norville and again broke through the defense, slotting the ball into the corner of the goal.
Finally, with under a minute remaining, Norville received a through ball from Wanless to finish off the victory.
Outstanding defensive efforts led by Erin Bahn, Kate Nackers, Olivia Bergstrom and Ellie Altfillish helped contribute to the shutout and Bethany Ruppert had four saves for the Zephyrs.
Omro 11, Berlin 0
OMRO - Ava Stachura scored three goals and added an assist as the Foxes built an 11-goal first-half lead.
Lindi Boeck, Mae Johnston and Delia Hughes added two goals each, while Lilly Ziemer and Holly Beck scored one each.
Boeck, Hughes and Kayanna Luther added assists.
Kadie Hazel made one save in net for Omro.
Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah 4, NEW Lutheran/Providence Academy 2
ELKHART LAKE - Edee Meyers and Ariana Jelenc scored two goals each as the Resorters raced out to a 4-1 halftime lead en route to the regional win.
Meyers, Jelenc and India Boyd had assists for Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah.
Natalie Lange scored both of the Blazers’ goals, while Eider Torres had an assist.
Kaitlyn Kesler made seven saves in net for the Resorters, while Emma Williams made 11 stops for NEW Lutheran/Providence.
Assumption 4, Richland Center 0
WISCONSIN RAPIDS - Aislinn Dolan scored twice and Addi Vollert and Kendall Duellman added goals as the Royals earned the regional win.
Sarah Shaw and Duellman added assists for Assumption.
The Royals outshot the Hornets 23-2 as they moved to 15-2 on the year. Richland Center finished at 1-16-1.
“This was an excellent game and our defense held the Hornets to two shots on goal,” Assumption coach Jim Wendels said. “We struggled finishing the ball tonight. We will work on that tomorrow at practice.”
The Royals will face River Valley in a regional final Saturday at 6 p.m. in Wisconsin Rapids.
Kiel 15, Clintonville 0
KIEL - The Raiders got goals from nine players in the win over the Truckers.
Abby Moore led the way for Kiel with three goals and two assists. Syd August, Taylor Schad, Maddie McDole and Lydia Vander Meer each had two goals. Jasmin Bink, Taavi Saeger and Addison Achter and Sage August all scored one goal.
Schad had three assists for Kiel with Kenda Muehlbauer, Vander Meer and Moore all getting two assists. Danielle Krutzik, Bink and McDole had one assist each.
Kyleigh Kroll was in goal for Kiel for the shutout.
Sheboygan Lutheran/Christian 3, Wrightstown 0
SHEBOYGAN - The Crusaders put up 53 shots in the win over the Tigers.
Keeran Blattner scored all three of Sheboygan Lutheran/Christian’s goals.
Naomi Doss had four saves in goal for Sheboygan Lutheran/Christian.
