THURSDAY PREP ROUNDUP: Bierman, Donaldson record multiple hits in Effingham's loss to Casey-Westfield

Mar. 22—CASEY, Ill. — It took extra innings to decide a victor between Effingham and Casey-Westfield on Thursday at Fairview Park.

The Flaming Hearts tied the game, 4-4, in the top of the seventh when Jerzi Bierman scored on a double by Sidney Donaldson. The Lady Warriors won the game in the eighth inning when Ava Goble drove in Anna Karras on a base hit.

"We played a good team today and played them tough," Effingham head coach Jerry Trigg said. "We should have won the game in seven; there were just a couple of mental mistakes, but otherwise, we're right there."

Bierman led the Hearts with four hits from the two-hole. She was the leadoff hitter as a sophomore.

"Jerzi has worked hard on her swing and approach, and it's paying off for her," Trigg said. "We thought a little more pop in the second spot would be more beneficial for us."

Donaldson had three hits, two of which were doubles and three RBIs from the three-hole.

"She's there for a reason," Trigg said. "She's our top power and line-drive hitter and doesn't strike out much."

Western Illinois softball recruit Raegan Boone added one hit, as well.

Natalie Armstrong and Saige Althoff split time in the circle.

Armstrong threw four innings, allowing seven hits, four runs, and one walk to four strikeouts. Althoff threw 3 2/3 innings, allowing four hits, one run, and two walks to one strikeout.

"Natalie is more of an up pitcher. She gets a lot of her outs on the rise ball, and Saige is better with the drop curve," said Trigg on his strategy of using two pitchers in the same game. "That's a good combination to have."

St. Anthony defeated Richland County, 9-1, at Paul Smith Field.

Connor Roepke and Henry Brent had two hits, and Beau Adams, Brock Fearday, and Sam Link had one for the Bulldogs (3-0-1).

Adams, Joseph Tegeler, Nick Ruholl, and Max Koenig pitched for St. A. Adams allowed three hits, one run, and two walks to three strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings. Tegeler had two strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings. Ruholl had three strikeouts in one inning, and Koenig had one strikeout in one inning.

Teutopolis 6, Casey (C.-Westfield) 1

Teutopolis defeated Casey-Westfield, 6-1, at Teutopolis High School Baseball Field.

Dawson Hoene, Davin Worman, Mick Niebrugge, Austin Borries, and Mitch Koester had one hit for the Wooden Shoes (3-2).

Logan Lawson and Evan Waldhoff pitched for T-Town. Lawson allowed one hit and three walks to three strikeouts in three innings. Waldhoff allowed four hits, one unearned run, and two walks to one strikeout in four innings.

Altamont 9, Newton 1

Altamont defeated Newton, 9-1, at Altamont High School Baseball Field.

Keegan Schultz had two hits, and Kaden Davis, Nathan Stuemke, Dillan Elam, and Eli Miller had one for the Indians (2-2).

Kade Milleville and Eli Miller pitched for Altamont. Milleville allowed three hits, one unearned run, and one walk to seven strikeouts in six innings. Eli Miller allowed one hit with two strikeouts in one inning.

As for the Eagles (6-3), Max Meinhart, Payton Harris, Gus Bierman, and Carson Barthelme had hits.

Dylan Gier, Hayden Mulvey, and Drake Wolf pitched for Newton. Gier allowed two hits, five runs, and six walks to five strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings. Mulvey allowed one run and four walks. Wolf allowed four hits and three runs with two strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings.

Toledo (Cumberland) 8, Cowden (C.-Herrick)/Beecher City 0

Cumberland defeated Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City, 8-0, at Toledo Volunteer Field.

Blake McMechan, Hudson McElravy, Wyatt Jackson, Kade McMechan, Maddox Miller, and Lance Lock had one hit for the Pirates (3-3).

Zack Buescher pitched and allowed seven hits and one walk to five strikeouts in seven innings.

As for the Bobcats, Hunter Pope had two hits (two doubles), Layne Jones had two hits, and Clayton Wojcik, AJ Radloff, Gage Lorton, and Carson Evans had one hit.

Albion (Edwards County) 6, Louisville (North Clay) 0

North Clay fell to Edwards County, 6-0, at North Clay High School Baseball Field.

Trenton Ingram had two hits, and Cayden Craig, Carder Walden, and Ayden Jones had one for the Cardinals (2-3).

Jack Compton, Jesse Weidner, and Ben Czyzewski pitched. Compton allowed five hits, four unearned runs, and one walk to five strikeouts in three innings. Weidner allowed three hits and two runs (one earned) with four strikeouts, and Czyzewski allowed one hit in 2/3 of an inning.

SOFTBALL

Effingham (St. Anthony) 21, Louisville (North Clay) 0

St. Anthony defeated North Clay, 21-0, in Clay County.

Stacie Vonderheide had three hits. Ava Walton, Hailey Niebrugge, Julia Schultz, Sydney Kibler, Maddie Kibler, and Lilly Gannaway had two hits, and Adysen Rios, Camille Wines, Addie Wernsing, Abbi Hatton, and Sadie Vineyard had one for the Bulldogs (4-0, 1-0 National Trail).

Sydney Kibler and Nancy Ruholl pitched. Kibler allowed one hit and two walks to three strikeouts in two innings. Ruholl had two strikeouts in two innings.

As for the Lady Cardinals, Faith Jones had the lone hit.

Charleston 3, Teutopolis 2

Teutopolis fell to Charleston, 3-2, in Coles County.

Olivia Wermert had two hits, and Olivia Hemmen and Chloe Hoene had one for the Lady Shoes (3-1).

Alyssa Tipton pitched and allowed six hits, three runs (two earned), and two walks to 12 strikeouts in six innings.

Altamont 4, Greenville 1

Altamont defeated Greenville, 4-1, at Gilbert Park.

Sophia Pearcy and Grace Lemke had two hits, and Claire Boehm and Madison Tonn had one for the Lady Indians (2-1).

Lemke pitched and allowed one hit, one unearned run, and one walk to 19 strikeouts in seven innings.

Patoka/Odin 17, St. Elmo/Brownstown 0

St. Elmo/Brownstown fell to Patoka/Odin, 17-0, in Marion County.

Dayana Haslett recorded the only hit for the Eagles (0-3).

Cumberland defeated Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond, 16-5, in Douglas County.

Ashton Tolen had three hits. Jade Carr, Libby McGinnis, Noraa Cross, Avery Donsbach, and Katie Kingery had two hits, and Shelby Kingery had one for the Lady Pirates (1-5, 1-0 Lincoln Prairie).

Aubrey Himes and Mia Holsapple pitched. Himes allowed one hit, five runs (one earned), and three walks to four strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings. Holsapple threw 1 1/3 innings.
