I’m seeing a lot of people saying Portland was had, and I’m seeing a lot of people saying Portland absolutely needed to get under the tax. The two aren’t mutually exclusive. Good on Cronin for making a prudent money move, but FFS the return was dismal. – 10:02 PM

Silver lining of the Portland trade today for Charlotte, they got a lot worse and the Pelicans still have a chance to make the play in and if they win could make the playoffs and send their 22 1st round pick to Charlotte – 7:07 PM

Keith Smith @KeithSmithNBA
There aren’t a lot of immediate silver linings for the Blazers trade today, but I wouldn’t be shocked if Keon Johnson turns into a pretty good player. Portland historically does a good job developing guards. Johnson gives them a cost control prospect to work with for a few years. – 7:04 PM

Sam Vecenie @Sam_Vecenie
Also will say on the Blazers deal: not sure it says anything about the team rebuilding. Think moving Powell/Covington is more about two things.
1. Simons’ emergence forced their hand a bit to move one of CJ/Powell to open up PT.
2. Covington is on an expiring deal, anyway. – 6:08 PM

Aaron J. Fentress @AaronJFentress
Another aspect to moving Powell is that Nassir Little should be starting at the 3 just to get more size on the court. Depending on other moves, Dame, CJ, Nas would the starting PG/G/SF trio with Ant getting 30 minutes off the bench. However, future moves could alter that. – 6:08 PM

Here’s how you know the Clippers did well today. If we played the old “who says no” game to today’s trade, the Blazers would be saying no. They gave up two first for Covington and a stud in Gary Trent for Powell. Getting cap fodder and a 2025 2nd for those two is a failure – 5:41 PM

Folks: You cannot bash this trade based on the two firsts dealt for Covington (2020, 2021) while IGNORING that Portland got back Keon Johnson, the 21st pick in 2021. The 2021 pick dealt was No. 23. Stop. You’re being disingenuous. – 4:15 PM

Blazers/Clips deal a good deal for Portland. Clears more playing time for Simons (who is really good) and starts to clean up the books. Blazers will likely continue to sink in the standings — which is probably exactly what they want. – 4:07 PM
