Three-peat: North Eugene's Francesca Tomp wins third straight OSAA 5A girls golf title

CORVALLIS — Francesca Tomp is a three-time state champion.

The North Eugene junior built off a strong performance on Monday to win in Tuesday's final round with a two-day score of 3-over-par 145 and complete the three-peat in the Class 5A girls golf championship at Trysting Tree Golf Club.

Tomp won by 12 strokes over Caldera's Anna Latimer. Saylor Gillet of Summit finished 13 strokes behind.

"This one is definitely a lot cooler," Tomp said. "I guess because it's three instead of two. One more to go, I guess, but it's definitely a lot cooler to me."

Tomp shot a 1-under-par 70 in Monday's opening round to take a seven-shot lead over Gillet. After teeing off on hole No. 1, she made three birdies in holes No. 3, No. 4 and No. 18.

Tomp said she felt under the weather entering the tournament but her strong performance on the first day was important given her outcome on the second day.

"It just created a cushion that made me feel a lot more comfortable going into today," Tomp said.

While fighting through nerves on day two, she made three bogeys on the front nine before making a birdie on hole 10.

"My nerves eased out as I started playing, so I wasn't as nervous when I got to nine and 10," Tomp said.

Tomp bogeyed on holes No. 12 and 13, finishing 4-over-par 75 on the second day.

"... It ended up fine but overall, it wasn't the best day in the world," Tomp said. "But it turned out fine."

Meanwhile, Latimer made a significant jump from fifth place at 10-over-par 81 on the first day to finish in second at 5-over-par 75.

Francesca Tomp is ninth Oregon girls golfer to three-peat

Tomp became the ninth Oregon girls golfers to have managed a three-peat and first since Olivia Loberg completed the feat from 2017 to 2019.

Tomp's mindset has remained the same throughout the years no matter the outcome. But she has seen growth within herself since her freshman year.

"I'm definitely not as rattled as I was," Tomp said. "When I was in the lead my freshman year, I was so nervous. But this year, I was just a little more calm."

Now, she's letting herself think about a fourth title in the year to come.

"When I only had two (titles) at the time, I thought about three not four. So, I guess now I'm thinking about four."

Wilsonville won the team title at 680, while Summit came in second at 716. North Eugene finished third with 763.

"To go from seventh to third and take home a trophy just shows where our program is headed," North Eugene head coach Shawn Brandt said. "And when you have a player like Francie (Tomp) that can be a part of that and elevate it is huge for the school and for the programs."

Thurston's Olivia Grandberry placed fifth as an individual with a two-day score of 162.
