SAULT STE. MARIE — The Michigan State Police Sault Ste. Marie Post is hosting its third annual Stuff a Blue Goose program from Nov. 29 to Dec. 15.

The program is designed to collect holiday donations for area families in need and is organized by Trooper Cody Mayer. For nearly two weeks, a Michigan State Police patrol vehicle, known as a "blue goose,” is going to be stationed inside three area car dealerships, O'Connor's, Rodenroth Motors and Soo Motors, for a friendly competition to see which can collect the most donations. The dealership that collects the most toys, non-perishable items and various types of gifts will win a plaque and bragging rights for the year.

“It’s great for the community and great for the dealerships,” said Mayer in a press release. “It gets people into the dealerships and provides a local, friendly place for citizens to drop off their holiday donations. A win/win for all.”

While the competitions have been “extremely close,” Soo Motors has been the reigning champion for the event both of the previous years.

Camela Yeck, secretary for the Michigan State Police Sault Post, explained in an email that in the past, once the competition was over, recipients were identified and the donations were sorted and packaged at the Elks. From there, the recipients were given a pick-up time to collect the gifts. This setup allowed for social distancing and a safe and efficient method to distribute the gifts. It is estimated that over $10,000 in gifts were collected last year. The Michigan State Police is hoping to exceed that goal this year.

Donations can be dropped off at any of the three dealerships between Nov. 29 and Dec. 15.

“It’s great for the community and great for the dealerships,” said Trooper Cody Mayer in a press release. “It gets people into the dealerships and provides a local, friendly place for citizens to drop off their holiday donations. A win/win for all.”
