Despite disappointing us all on Sunday, the Buffalo Bills have an early shot this week at redemption. Playing in the Thursday night contest for week two, the Bills take on the New York Jets in a game that will go a long way in determining the outlook for the rest of their “playoff-or-bust” season.

With the game taking place later today, here are three keys to victory for the Buffalo Bills against the hated Jets of New York.

1. Protect the quarterback and running back

Expected to be one of the strongest areas of the team this season, the Buffalo Bills offensive line was an absolute disaster against the Ravens. Allowing sacks, quarterback hits, and tackles for loss at high levels, news got even worse or the offensive line this week with the recent news that star left tackle Cordy Glenn would be out for the game.

Struggling to protect both quarterback Tyrod Taylor and the team’s talented running backs, the offensive line has to step up to the plate tonight. Pushing back the Jets rushers and allowing the ball carrier time to pick his way through a gap. Allowing Tyrod the time to look downfield. Most importantly, keeping the players with the ball alive and upright while they are behind the line of scrimmage.

2. Pin the Jets in their own end

Based on the play of the defense last Sunday against the Ravens, the offense does not need to be spectacular to win this game. Even if the offense struggles but does find some success, playing the field position game could be key to their chances at winning the game against their division rivals.

Keeping the Jets opening field position well within their own half of the field, the Jets will be consistently challenged to travel most of the length of the field. With the defense playing strong, the Jets will have to find ways to overcome consistently, something the Bills defense can and should be able to prevent.

3. Pressure Ryan Fitzpatrick

With former Bills’ signal caller Ryan Fitzpatrick at the helm, most of Buffalo should know what there going to get from this game. Having a great set of players in the secondary, the main goal for the Bills defense should be to get pressure on Fitzpatrick and force the Jets into a running based attack.

Believing in your secondary, use all the tools at your disposal in the front seven to get pressure on Fitzpatrick. Forcing the Jets into mistakes would be a good way to both prevent their offense from building momentum but also give the Bills offense some good field position.

Doing these three things, I firmly believe that the Buffalo Bills should be able to defeat the New York Jets.
