A controversial call and yellow card for Rose Lavelle, who started for the United States against Portugal in FIFA Women's World Cup 2023 Group E play, will keep the midfielder and former Cincinnati United Premier and Mount Notre Dame High School standout out of USWNT's Round of 16 match after earning the 0-0 draw needed to advance. It was the second yellow card she accumulated in the group stage, resulting in suspension for the knockout-stage match.

JP Dellacamera and Aly Wagner, calling the game for Fox, said during the broadcast that they didn't think Lavelle deserved a yellow card late in the first half.

"That's unfortunate. She's trying hard to win the ball," Dellacamera said.

"I think that's a harsh call. I do," Wagner said, as the replay was shown.

"Yeah. Foul maybe. Not a yellow," Dellacamera added.

"I think we can control our energy. I think that's gonna be big. Positive vibes," Lavelle told Fox's Jenny Taft afterward. "Disappointed in myself for getting the yellow and not being able to help the team next game, but I think there's other ways off the field I can help the team and that's what I'll do."
