Texas UIL Realignment 2024: New districts announced; Legacy, Memorial headed west as expected

The University Interscholastic League will announce it's biennial realignment at 9 a.m. Thursday which will determine which classification, district, and — in the case of football — which division schools will play in for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 school years.

Every two years, the UIL provides one of the state's greatest talking points by reconfiguring all six classifications, districts, and in the case of football, divisions.

While the effect is felt statewide, this is the place to be to get updates and analysis about this year's process and how it pertains to the Wichita Falls area.

What is UIL Realignment

The UIL requires all districts participating in interscholastic competition to submit current high school enrollment numbers in October of odd-numbered years.

The organization takes these enrollment numbers and slots the schools with other like-sized schools and based on enrollment growth, determines the parameters for every classification from Class 6A to 1A.

It further splits up the classifications into Division I and Division II in football from Class 5A down.

Once this happens, the league announces what the new cutoffs will be for each classification and division in December, along with which schools have elected to opt into a higher classification. This leads up to February in even-numbered years when the UIL releases district information for football and basketball with other sports released later on Realignment Day.

Typically in Class 5A and Class 6A the basketball districts will mirror all other sports, but in the smaller districts with charter schools and schools that do not field teams in every sport, the districts in other sports can vary.

Local storylines

Among the area football scenarios we're watching are:

  • Will WFISD's new schools, Legacy and Memorial, be placed in a district with Lubbock, Amarillo and Abilene schools as expected?

  • Where does Burkburnett land? The Bulldogs are on an island in Class 4A Division II and could be pulled in three different directions.

  • Will Iowa Park and Vernon be pulled into a Panhandle district in Class 3A Division I?

  • Will Jacksboro rejoin other local Class 3A Division II programs City View, Holliday and Henrietta in a district?

  • Which way will the UIL pull Olney for its Class 2A Division I district? Like Burkburnett, Olney is a fair distance away from any other program in its division.

  • Does Quanah leave the Panhandle and come back to a district with local teams such as Seymour, Electra, Archer City, Petrolia and Windthorst? How many of our local Class 2A Division II teams end up in the same district?
