TEXAS TECH ROUNDUP: Fritz throws perfect game as softball ends undefeated at home tournament

The Red Raiders had an eventful weekend, which concluded with a pair of wins over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (9-1) and Tulsa (2-0) to finish undefeated in the Texas Tech Invitational held at Rocky Johnson Field.

And while winning the last four contests brought Texas Tech (12-12) back to .500, there was another notable accomplishment a day prior.

TTU starter Kendall Friz struck out three batters and finished off a five-inning, perfect-game performance in a 9-0 win over the Islanders.

On offense, the Texas Tech lineup strung together five base hits to score three runs and force a pitching change while Fritz set the tone inside the circle for the Red Raiders. She retired all 15 batters she faced, striking out three, while forcing nine out in the air and three on the ground toward her first collegiate perfect game and the fourth in program history.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

WACO — The No. 34 Lady Raiders fell to No. 33 Baylor 7-0 on Sunday at the Hurd Tennis Center.

With the setback, Texas Tech (7-6, 0-2 Big 12) started 0-2 in Big 12 play for the first time since the 2013-14 season when Tech fell to Baylor and Texas. Tech opened Big 12 play on Friday afternoon with a 4-1 setback at No. 8 Texas.

Texas Tech got off to a slow start on Sunday, as Baylor (11-4, 2-0 Big 12) won the doubles point with a pair of 6-2 victories on court one and court three.

In singles play. No. 70 Avelina Sayfetdinova and Metka Komac both won the opening set of their matches before falling in a pair of 10-point third-set tiebreakers. Sayfetdinova

Texas Tech returns to action at noon Wednesday afternoon at No. 49 Nebraska.

MEN'S TENNIS

MESA, Ariz. — Led by clutch performances from Isaac Arevalo and Reed Collier, the Texas Tech men's tennis program secured a come-from-behind 4-2 victory over Wichita State on Sunday at the Kawanis Tennis Center.

Down early, Texas Tech (12-6) rallied to win for the seventh time in eight matches.

The doubles point got off to a good start for the Red Raiders, as Arevalo and Piotr Pawlak cruised to a 6-1 victory on court one. After the Shockers (9-8) answered back with a 6-2 victory on court two, WSU clinched the doubles point with a 7-5 victory on court three.

Behind a strong final two sets from Collier, Texas Tech was able to win on court two. The victory gave Tech a 3-2 lead. Collier rebounded after losing the first set in a tiebreaker to win the final two sets one and four.

Just one point shy of clinching the second victory over WSU in 10 days, Tech turned to court one where Arevalo fought off an opening-set setback to cruise to the next two sets, four and three.

The Red Raiders will take a week off before returning to action at 5 p.m. Mar. 25 at Middle Tennessee State.
