Texas Tech baseball tabbed 4th in Big 12 preseason poll

The Texas Tech baseball team was picked fourth in the preseason Big 12 poll, which was released on Thursday.

The Red Raiders received 107 points in the poll, which was voted on the conference's head coaches.

Texas Tech finished 41-23 overall and 12-12 in Big 12 play in 2023 and finished sixth in the conference. The Red Raiders advanced to the championship game of the Big 12 tournament and the Gainesville Regional of the NCAA Tournament, falling on both penultimate games.

TCU received 11 first-place votes to be named the Big 12 favorite with 143 points. Texas followed with two first-place votes and 131 to come in second. Oklahoma State came in third, Tech fourth and Kansas State fifth in the poll.

Rounding out the poll is Oklahoma and West Virginia (tied for sixth), Kansas (eighth), Houston (ninth), UCF (10th), Baylor (11th) and BYU and Cincinnati (tied for 12th).

On Wednesday, first baseman Gavin Kash was a unanimous selection to the preseason all-Big 12 team.

Texas Tech opens the 2024 season Feb. 16 with its first five games coming at Globe Life Field. The first three are part of the Shriners Children's College Showdown with games against Tennessee (7 p.m. on Feb. 16), Nebraska (3 p.m. on Feb. 17) and Oregon (2:30 p.m. on Feb. 18).

James Lockhart IV was named the new outside linebackers coach at UT Rio Grande Valley on Thursday.

Lockhart spent the last two years as the defensive quality control assistant at Texas Tech. He previously coached at Baylor. He played collegiately at Baylor and Texas A&M and participated in the Pittsburgh Steelers' training camp in 2020.

Lockhart worked with the Red Raiders' outside linebackers coach C.J. Ah You in his time at Lubbock.
