Texas Tech baseball swept at home in Big 12 play for first time since 2007 | 3 takeaways

Senior day at Dan Law Field went the same as the first two games of the final home series of the 2024 season did for the Texas Tech baseball team: Oklahoma walked away with the win.

The Sooners completed the series sweep with a 8-7 win on Sunday afternoon, holding off a late rally by Texas Tech that saw the tying run at third base with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Oklahoma won the first two games 8-0 and 7-5.

The Red Raiders (30-20) were swept at home in a three-game series for the first time since 2011. It was also the first time since 2007 Texas Tech lost all three games of a home series in Big 12 play.

Texas Tech has now lost seven of its past eight games and six-straight Big 12 contests.

Trouble strikes early for Texas Tech baseball

Five batters into the game, the Red Raiders needed a pitching change.

Starting pitcher Mac Heuer started off well, coming back from a 3-0 count to leadoff batter John Spikerman to get a strikeout. TJ Pompey had an error with the next batter, Heuer got a groundout for the second out and then Michael Snyder launched a two-run home run to give the Sooners an early lead.

Heuer managed just four more pitches before coming out of the game with an injury. Trainers came out to check on the freshman after falling being 3-1 to Anthony Mackenzie. He appeared to grab his back and was removed, giving way to Parker Hutyra.

Home runs bolster the Sooners

Snyder's home run was the first of three two-run shots for the Sooners to break the game open.

Spikerman added a two-run blast of his own in the top of the third inning — just his second homer of the season. After a three-run bottom of the fifth for Texas Tech to cut into the deficit, Easton Carmichael got a pair back in the top of the sixth with his own two-run shot to left field.

Red Raiders had a spark, then it was gone

Texas Tech had a chance to get back into the game. Trailing 6-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Red Raiders scored a trio of runs on a wild pitch and two errors to make it a two-run game. That was before Carmichael's back-breaking home run, quickly deflating any momentum the Red Raiders gained just a half-inning before.

Landon Stripling came to the play with runners at second and third and one out in the seventh. Tech only got one run out of the situation, a sacrifice fly from Stripling.

Gavin Kash led off the bottom of the ninth with a solo home run. Oklahoma pitcher Ryan Lambert worked around a walk to Kevin Bazzell. Stripling had an RBI groundout to make it 8-7 before Lambert got Cade McGee to fly out to right field with the tying run at third.

What's next?

The Red Raiders will close Big 12 play with a three-game series at Oklahoma State. The first two games of the series (Friday and Saturday) are slated for 6 p.m. starts with Sunday's finale scheduled for 2 p.m.
