Texans QB Davis Mills says rookie RB Dameon Pierce has been ‘one of the hardest workers’
Taking a look at Dameon Pierce’s yards per carry and highlights throughout the preseason is evidence alone he should be the Houston Texans’ starting running back.
However, the rookie has backed up his talent with a veteran work ethic that has been equally impressive in the eyes of his teammates.
Quarterback Davis Mills attested to the studious and conscientious nature of the fourth-round pick when meeting with reporters on Wednesday.
“He’s been one of the hardest workers all camp,” said Mills. “In the building, one of the earliest guys here, last ones to leave. He’s ready for the opportunity and I know what we’ve seen from him preseason and throughout camp so far.”
The most promising example of what the Texans’ offense could look like with Pierce as the feature back was on Houston’s opening drive against the San Francisco 49ers in the preseason finale. The Texans capped off an 11-play, 85-yard drive with Pierce punching it in from the 1-yard line. The Florida product had six carries for 37 yards, a whopping 6.16 yards per carry.
“Everybody is excited for what he’s going to be able to do,” Mills said. “So, we’re all fired up for him.”
The Texans host the Indianapolis Colts Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Central Time at NRG Stadium. If Pierce is able to be as productive in the regular season opener as he has been throughout the preseason, it should help Houston maintain their undefeated streak over their AFC South rivals in Week 1 (2-0).
