Texans not expected to rush decision on David Culley’s future as coach
HOUSTON — The NFL regular season is over, and non-playoff teams across the league wasted no time firing their head coach. But for the Houston Texans, the future of David Culley could take more than a day to figure out whether or not there will be a coaching change in Houston.
According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the Texans are not expected to have any announcements on Monday in regards to Culley’s coaching status. Per Fowler, the Texans will take the next few days to evaluate all phases of football operations.
“I’m just looking forward to this offseason and moving forward with the team,” Culley said following the Texans’ Week 18 loss to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. “As of right now, I feel like I will be coaching this team next year. I have not had any questions or doubts about what’s going to happen. I am looking forward to being the head coach of this football team next season.”
Culley signed a five-year deal in January of 2021 to become the fourth head coach in the Texans’ 19-year history. After the Texans dropped their season finale in a 28-25 loss to the Titans at NRG Stadium, Houston ended the 2021 campaign with a 4-13 record.
Culley said after the loss that he wishes the Texans had won more games throughout the season.
“The season didn’t go as we wanted to, but (David) Culley is a great coach — we love him,” rookie wide receiver Nico Collins said. “He brings the juice. He picks us up when we’re down. He is a great coach. I love him a lot. I appreciate him, everything he did this year, and looking for the future, for sure.”
The first round of head coaches departing across the NFL began early Sunday morning with the jettison of Vic Fangio from the Denver Broncos. On Monday, the list of fired coaches expanded to four, with the dismissing of Mike Zimmer (Vikings), Matt Nagy (Bears) and Brian Flores (Dolphins).
