Recap: Tennessee Titans defense holds on again to win in Washington

The Tennessee Titans will try to score their third consecutive victory when they visit the Washington Commanders Sunday at FedEx Field.

After opening the season with a win over the Jacksonville Jaguars the Commanders (1-3) have lost three straight.

The two teams don't often play. Washington has won three of the last five games in the series dating back to 2002. The Titans won the last game 25-16 in 2018 at Nissan Stadium.

The Titans (2-2) jumped to a 24-3 first half lead last week then had to hold on for a 24-17 win at Indianapolis. The Commanders lost at Dallas 25-10.

The coaches for both teams — Tennessee's Mike Vrabel and Washington's Ron Rivera — are former NFL players and close friends.

The Titans have a bye after playing Washington.

Fourth quarter

David Long makes the game-winning play for the Tennessee Titans

FINAL: Titans win! David Long with the interception at the goal line. What a play.

Titans 21, Commanders 17.

INSTANT ANALYSIS: Tennessee Titans hold off Washington Commanders by finally scoring in the second half

19 seconds left: Pass interference on Kristian Fulton. First and goal Washington.

36 seconds left: The Commanders' end-of-half clock management strikes again. Ron Rivera wastes eight seconds before a timeout.

53 seconds left: Terry McLaurin YACs for a first down to the Titans' 29.

3:10 left: Kristian Fulton back in the game.

3:54 left: An egregious challenge by Commanders coach Ron Rivera on a third down incomplete pass. Clearly hit the ball.

Ruling on the field stands after review. Commanders lose a timeout. 4th and 1, and the Commanders will go for it.

First down Washington on a Brian Robinson dive.

5:43 left: Ryan Tannehill is decked while scrambling on a third down rollout. Titans will punt. Still not great in the second half on offense!

Commanders will start at their own 11-yard line. Time is waning. Titans need at least another stop.

7:39 left: Carson Wentz has no interest in sitting in the pocket, and throws a checkdown on third down. Not a competitive play. Commanders will punt.

9:12 left: Titans feasting on Washington left guard Andrew Norwell, who has now given up multiple sacks and has been called for multiple penalties. Jeffery Simmons with the sack that time.

9:22 left: Kristian Fulton leaves the game with an injury after defending a run.

Meanwhile, a Jeffery Simmons roughing the passer penalty gives Washington a first down. Very debatable if that was a penalty.

9:53 left: That was not a good play from Ryan Tannehill on 3rd and 6 from the Commanders' 34-yard line. Instead of throwing the ball away, he scrambles and is sacked near midfield. No decision about a FG needed after that. Titans punt.

12:28 left: Titans go for it on 4th and 2, and Derrick Henry converts. Titans inside the Washington 40.

14:03 left: Denico Autry, who was questionable to return with a back injury, is in the game and sacks Carson Wentz on third down. Commanders punt.

Third quarter

Nick Westbrook-Ikhine's 61-yard catch sets up Derrick Henry TD

1:03 left: Touchdown Titans! In the second half! Derrick Henry sticks the ball out in the pile near the goal line. One yard run.

Before that, Austin Hooper with a big first down catch on third down over the middle to set up first and goal.

Titans 21, Commanders 17. First Titans second-half TD since the opener.

4:18 left: There's the response from the Titans offense. Ryan Tannehill finally gets time, steps up and heaves a pass to Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, who makes the catch inside the Washington 20. Titans threatening.

Dyami Brown's 2nd TD of the day puts Commanders ahead

4:36 left: Touchdown Commanders. Dyami Brown beats Roger McCreary on a back-shoulder throw.

Commanders 17, Titans 14.

8:01 left: Another Titans 3-and-out. Da'Ron Payne TFL, Efe Obada sack, Jonathan Allen QB hurry.

9:29 left: Rashad Weaver deflects the fourth down pass, and it's a turnover on downs. That changes field position. Titans need a Derrick Henry drive here.

9:36 left: Jeff Simmons bats a pass at the line of scrimmage on third down. 4th and 4 at the Titans' 40 upcoming.

Denico Autry on one knee just short of the Titans sideline.

11:46 left: Titans 3-and-out to start the second half. Not going to say it yet...

Washington will start its next drive in Tennessee territory.

12:41 left: Carson Wentz throws over his receiver on third down near midfield. Commanders will punt to start the second half.

Second quarter

HALFTIME: Titans 14, Commanders 10.

This look like a Derrick Henry type of game. But the Titans have to be better in the second half than they have been this season. Either that will improve, or the Titans lead needed to be larger. Tennessee can't be awful at second halves all season, right? Right?

Derrick Henry TD puts the Titans ahead before halftime

17 seconds left: Touchdown Titans. Derrick Henry powers in from a yard out. Tennessee with a really good end-of-half drive with a lot of Derrick Henry. 83 rushing yards for Henry in the first half.

Titans 14, Commanders 10. Commanders had two timeouts, used one to try and save some time but let the clock roll for about 20 seconds before Henry's TD.

1:55 left: Efe Obada roughing the passer penalty gives the Titans a first down inside the Commanders' 30.

4:28 left: Derrick Henry up to 65 rushing yards in the first half.

5:17 left: What a play by Ryan Tannehill, getting the ball off while in the grasp of Montez Sweat to complete for a first down.

10:47 left: Ryan Tannehill sacked for a third time in this first half.

4th and 36. Titans opt for a punt.

13:15 left: Derrick Henry getting going with a 15-yard run.

Dyami Brown beats Caleb Farley on a deep shot, and the Commanders lead

13:56 left: Carson Wentz first down shot downfield to Dyami Brown, who beats Caleb Farley and runs away for a 75-yard touchdown. Wow.

Brown's first NFL touchdown. Commanders 10, Titans 7.

14:43 left: Ryan Tannehill sacked by Montez Sweat on third down. Punt.

First quarter

1:04 left: Some noise from Titans fans in attendance on third down. Very nice. Carson Wentz has to fall on a snap for the second time today.

Joey Slye from 50-yards is good. Titans 7, Commanders 3.

3:46 left: Carson Wentz with a shot downfield to Curtis Samuel, who snags the catch before Kevin Byard can get there. Commanders into Titans territory.

Titans on the board first via Dontrell Hilliard TD catch

3:58 left: Next play is a fake right to Derrick Henry, screen pass left to Dontrell Hilliard, who is untouched into the end zone. Hilliard's third TD catch of the year.

4:35 left: Biggest play of the first quarter is a screen pass to Derrick Henry, who rumbles for 24 yards to the Commanders' 13.

7:03 left: The Commanders offense is not good. Another 3-and-out. Some boos at FedEx Field.

Short punt, too. 31-yard punt from Tress Way, and the Titans are near midfield.

8:40 left: Tannehill goes deep to Nick Westbrook-Ikhine on third down, but it's incomplete. One first down, and a punt.

12:01 left: Carson Wentz throws incomplete on 3rd down. Two 3-and-outs to start the day at FedEx Field.

Good coverage by Roger McCreary.

13:37 left: Jonathan Allen wrecks the Titans' 3rd down play with a pressure and hit on Ryan Tannehill. Here comes Ryan Stonehouse.

15:00 left: Titans will receive. Let's get going in the D.C. suburbs.
