Tennessee basketball to play at North Carolina in ACC/SEC Challenge

Tennessee basketball will play at North Carolina in the inaugural ACC/SEC Challenge.

The Vols and Tar Heels will play at the Dean Smith Center in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, at 7:15 p.m. ET on Nov. 29 with TV designation to be announced at a later date.

Tennessee has faced North Carolina three times in Rick Barnes' tenure. It won the most recent matchup 89-72 in the Hall of Fame Tip-off Tournament in Uncasville, Connecticut, in November 2021. The Vols played a home-and-home with the Tar Heels in December 2016 and December 2017. UT had not faced UNC in a home-and-home set since 1947 and 1949 prior to that series.

The Vols have a 2-10 record against the Tar Heels.

The ACC/SEC Challenge marked the end of the SEC/Big 12 challenge, which had its 10th and final installment in the 2022-23 season. It also ended the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, which started in 1999.

Tennessee has four games scheduled against power-conference opponents not including a three-game stint in the Maui Invitational from Nov. 20-22.

UT will play North Carolina State on Dec. 16 in San Antonio, Texas, as part of the Hall of Fame Series.

The Vols will play the Badgers in Madison, Wisconsin, on Nov. 10, one of two nonconference game with a Big Ten opponent. Tennessee is hosting Illinois at Thompson-Boling Arena on Dec. 9 in the first game of a two-game set against the Fighting Illini.

Tennessee is slated to play a closed scrimmage at Michigan State prior to the season. The Vols and Spartans played a closed scrimmage in Knoxville prior to the 2022-23 season. The return trip to East Lansing, Michigan, was part of the agreement.
