With the first debate of the federal election campaign under our belts, Canadians will spend the next five weeks evaluating which party, and leader, is the best choice to lead the country.
To carry us through to election day, each party has released advertisements in an effort to entice voters to join their cause.
Liberals: ‘‘Choose Forward’
Last month, Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party released its “Choose Forward” advertisement. It begins with Trudeau on a city bus, stressing that he got into politics “to help people,” with images flashing of him talking people who reside in the Papineau riding on Quebec.
In the advertisement, Trudeau calls out the Conservatives, saying that Andrew Scheer’s party “cut taxes for the wealthy and cut services for everybody else.”
“In October we have a choice to make: keep moving forward and build on the progress we’ve made or go back to the politics of the Harper years,” Trudeau says near the end of the video.
Conservatives: ‘It’s time for you to get ahead’
The Conservative Party has released quite a view videos messages before election day, including one dedicated to communicating his platform intentions to Canadians.
In the advertisement, Scheer talks through his core priorities, primarily making life more affordable for Canadians.
“I have a plan to lower the cost of living, to make life more affordable, to leave more money in the pockets of Canadians,” Scheer says in the video.
Following the advertisement about his plan, the party released several additional videos, which particularly to call out the point that Trudeau is “not as advertised.”
In one, the Conservative leader breaks down a series of instances where Trudeau “lied” to Canadians, outside with the parliament building in the background, including raising taxes, not balancing the budget and violating the Conflict of Interest Act.
“He said he would be different but as the last four years have shown, Justin Trudeau is not as advertised,” Scheer says in the video.
Green Party: ‘It’s time for Canada to vote Green’
The Green Party’s advertisement is focused on the climate emergency that is plaguing the world.
“We only have 17 months to stop climate chaos,” the text on the video reads. “But Liberals and Conservatives have the same targets as Harper, which will result in runaway climate change.”
The Green Party is referring to the belief that Canadians need to take action to reduce our carbon emissions in the next couple of years to hold the global temperature increase to no more than 1.5 C.
The party’s “Mission Possible” plan sets out to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 60 per cent by 2030 and to zero by 2050.
NDP: ‘In it for you’
Consistent with NDP policies, party leader Jagmeet Singh’s advertisement highlights his goal to prioritize services for Canadians over the interest of the “wealthy and well-connected.”
“People tell me I’m different from the other leaders, and I am,” Singh says to start off the video.
The advertisement shows the NDP leader engaging with families, medical professionals, steelworkers and children, while saying that his plan to actually “doing” the right things, not just saying them, is really what makes him different.
