Sunday's local roundup, results: PNJ All-Stars advance to New England Regional final

Senior Babe Ruth

Paul N. Johnson 5, Vermont 4: Peter Lavache singled in a run in the bottom of the sixth ining as the PNJ All-Stars edged Vermont in an elimination game of the New England Regional in Keene, New Hampshire.

Ryan Bonin (3 RBIs) had a two-run double in the first to give PNJ a 2-1 lead. After Vermont took a 3-2 lead, Paul N. Johnson's Shane Gardner scored on a sacrifice fly in the third, and Isaac Swedberg scored on another sac fly in the fifth to put PNJ back on top.

Cam Early earned the win with 1⅔ innings of perfect relief for Paul N. Johnson. Josh Farrell started and scattered five hits over five innings with two strikeouts.

The win gave PNJ a 10 a.m. Monday rematch with Stamford (Conn.) in the final, PNJ would earn a shot at the title at 1 p.m. with a win in the morning.

Stamford 3, Paul N. Johnson 2: Early doubled in a run in the first inning, and Garrett Hurley drove in a run in the fifth, but Stamford rallied in the eighth to take the win in an earlier winners' bracket game.

Griffin Berard gave up two runs on four hits while striking out two over five innings for PNJ. Ryan Bonin, Anthony Nuzzolio, Shane Gardner, Peter Lavache, and Early each had one hit.

American Legion

Shrewsbury 8, Beverly 2: Brady Shea struck out seven and allowed two runs over 6⅔ innings as Shrewsbury stayed perfect with a win in a winners' bracket semifinal in the American Legion State Tournament at Mahan Field in Natick.

Shrewsbury advances to face Franklin at 7 p.m. Monday at Mahan.

Jimmy Mitchell doubled, homered and drove in three runs, and Ryan Walton homered and drove in three runs to lead Shrewsbury's offense.

Futures Collegiate League

Pittsfield 12, Bravehearts 11: Matty Warren and Tyler Bastunas each drove in two runs and Warren, Bastunas, Jack Thorbahn (double), Vinny Eramo, Christian Limon and Mike Maher all had two hits, but the host Bravehearts lost a slugfest with the Suns at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.

Worcester (32-19) is off for three days, but will send nine players to the Futures League All-Star Game on Tuesday before returning home to host Nashua in a doubleheader Thursday, with the first pitch slated for 10:30 a.m.

Cranston Western (R.I.) 10, Burkett 5: The Jesse Burkett All-Stars fell in the opening game round robin play of the New England Regional in Bristol, Connecticut.

Burkett will play Maine at 7 p.m. Monday, in a game broadcast live on ESPN+.
