Sturgis swims to win on senior night, program record set

STURGIS — It was a successful senior night for the Sturgis swim and dive program on Monday.

The Lady Trojans were hosting South Haven and picked up a 98-82 victory. Kaylee Draper, not a senior, earned a state-qualifying time in the 100 butterfly at the competition. Her time in that race was a first place 1:02.73.

Seniors Jane Toner and Elly Compton were both recognized prior to the event. Sturgis won eight of the 12 events.

The first swim of the night was the 200 medley relay. Sturgis won that race with Draper, Kenzy Triezenberg, Ainsley Gump and Emma Garbine posting a time of 1:59.77. The team of Mia Albarran, Chloe Clark, Stella Males and Mia Feyes came in third at 2:24.64 while the team of Rylee Myers, Jazira Lara-Flores, Brisa Oros and Kylie Rose posted a time of 2:46.79 for fifth.

Gump won the 200 freestyle at 2:13.85, Joner came in third at 2:24.85 and Compton was fifth at 2:31.21. Gump also won the 100 freestyle at 56.52 seconds, Emma Garbine was second at 57.22 seconds.

Hannah Garbine's time in the 200 individual medley was 2:29.78, good for first. Triezenberg was third at 2:44.63 and Clark came in fourth at 2:57.17.

Emma Garbine won the 50 freestyle, swimming a time of 26.68 seconds. Abarran finished fifth at 29.02 seconds and Feyes finished sixth at 33.07 seconds.

Cora Taylor was second in diving, she posted 117.05 points.

Finishing after Draper in the 100 butterfly was Hannah Garbine in third at 1:10.34 and Males at 1:23.87 in fourth.

Toner swam to third in the 500 freestyle at 6:31.16, Compton came in fourth at 6:49.94.

The 200 freestyle relay team of Draper, Gump, Hannah Garbine and Emma Garbine won. Their time was 1:44.68. The team of Triezenberg, Albarran, Compton and Toner was third at 1:56.95.

Draper won the backstroke as well, she posted a time of 1:04.37. Albarran came in fourth at 1:21.50 and Males was fifth for the Trojans at 1:24.58.

Triezenberg finished second overall in the 100 breastroke at 1:18.42. Clark came in fourth at 1:36.19 and Lara-Flores was sixth at 1:47.58.

The final race, the 400 freestyle relay, saw a Sturgis team of Hannah Garbine, Rose, Compton and Toner come in second at 4:28.10.

On Saturday, a handful of Lady Trojans traveled to the Michigan Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association meet at Calvin University. The MISCA meet is separate from the official MHSAA finals and features all four divisions competing against each other.

The 200 freestyle relay team set a new record. The team of Draper, Gump, Hannah Garbine and Emma Garbine posted a time of 1:43.04. The previous record stood since 2000 as Mackenzie Mikulenas, Steph Teeple, Kari Newman and Kara Martin had a time of 1:44.20.

The 200 medley relay team of Draper, Triezenberg, Gump and Emma Garbine posted a time of 1:55.61. Gump's time in the 200 individual medley was 2:21.64 while the 50 freestyle saw Gump post a time of 26.78 seconds. Draper's time in the 50 freestyle was 25.09 seconds.

Emma Garbine posted a time of 56.91 seconds in the 100 freestyle. Draper's time in the 100 backstroke was 1:02.03.
