Sturgis offense sputters in home losses to Edwardsburg

STURGIS - The Sturgis baseball team dropped a pair of games at home on Tuesday to visiting Edwardsburg.

Gibson Cary did all he could on the mound for the Trojans in the game. He pitched all seven innings and struck out 12 Edwardsburg batters in the game, yielding only five hits over the course of the game. He walked only one as well and surrendered no earned runs. Edwardsburg won the first contest, 1-0.

Sturgis, though, could not get the bats going in the game. Cary hit a double in the bottom of the sixth inning but would be stranded there as the inning came to a close.

Payton Bookwalter was strong on the mound for Edwardsburg. He held the Trojans to just one hit and struck out 17 batters in the game.

The Eddies picked up a 16-0 victory in the second game, it lasted just three innings. Edwardsburg put up an eight spot in the second and third innings in the contest.

Sturgis did not register a hit in three plate appearances. Cary did draw a walk.

The Trojans are now 3-14 on the season.

Marcellus stays unbeaten with sweep

The Marcellus baseball team improved to 23-0 on the year with a pair of victories over Gobles on Tuesday.

SOFTBALL: Edwardsburg offense carries team to sweep at Sturgis

The Wildcats won 5-4 in the first game. Nathan Mihills pitched all seven innings with three strikeouts for the Cats.

Offensively, Abram Coffey collected three hits in the first game. Cale Hackenberg drove in two runs with a hit while Brock Buck and Cole Thornburgh each were credited with a run driven in.

Marcellus scored twice in the top of the seventh to win the second, 4-2.

Buck doubled in two runs to give the Cats the advantage late in the game.

Mihills had two hits. Brock McWilliams and Thornburgh both had a base hit while Coffey drove in one.

Dawsen Lehew pitched seven innings, striking out four.

Otsego, TR split games

Three Rivers split a pair of games with Otsego on Tuesday.

Otsego won the first, 4-2. Kaleb Williams pitched six innings with three strikeouts for the Cats.

Drew McClain had two hits for Three Rivers. Peyton Hradsky, Luis Warmack, and Williams each registered one hit.

Three Rivers won the second game, 6-3. Brady Penny struck out three in six innings, picking up the win.

McClain, Mason Awe and Jace Gray each collected three hits for Three Rivers in the win.

Mendon tops Burr Oak

The Mendon baseball team beat Burr Oak 15-1 on Tuesday.

Jackson Kindig led the Hornet offense with three hits, he drove in one. Cody Bingaman and Carter Huston each had two hits, they combined to drive in three.

Brayden Crites drove in two with a base hit. Zak Iobe also was credited with two RBIs in the game, Xavior Zinsmaster plated one as well with a hit.

Bingaman struck out six in three innings.

Constantine wins twice

The Constantine baseball team beat Berrien Springs twice on Monday, 11-4 and 14-0.

The opener saw the Falcons collect nine hits at the plate, including two each with one run driven in by Dathan Smith and Austin Forrester. Caleb Bontrager, Logan Kee and Brody Godfrey each connected for a hit and one run driven in. Finishing with one hit and two RBIs each in the game were Cooper Juday and Alex Brossman.

Smith earned the victory in relief, tossing the final two innings.

Constantine totaled 11 hits in the second game, three coming from Forrester with two RBIs. Smith drove in four runs with a pair of hits as well. Juday and Cole Walker both drove in two runs.

Bontrager pitched all three innings for the win.
