Stone baseball falls to Upperman
Mar. 23—In what looked more like the championship game of a district baseball
tournament, Stone Memorial and Upperman High School matched up in an early regular season contest in Crossville Monday night.
Runs were few and far between as the two powerhouse teams fought back and forth for some kind of advantage.
Stone Memorial struck early, but UHS came on strong late to take the 6-2 victory.
Nick Osmun got the call on the mound for the Panthers, while Upperman
ace Caden Shanks toed the rubber for the Bees. Each hurler had great
stuff early as Osmun, unofficially, had 10 strikeouts. He allowed only four hits.
Shanks had good control of his stuff, too. He struck out 12 SMHS batters, while giving up two hits in 4 2/3 innings.
After holding the Bees scoreless in the top of the first, Stone Memorial
picked up two runs in the bottom of the inning.
Talyn Hurd led off the
game with a double. Bryce Elmore was then hit by a pitch, and a single
by Drake Scarbrough later brought in both runners to make it 2-0.
The score stayed 2-0 until the top of the fourth when the Bees tied the
game. Alec Wilson and Rookie Allison reached base for Upperman and later scored on two errors.
The Bees took the lead for good in the fifth inning when they posted two
more runs to make it 4-2. Shanks reached base on a single and he came
around to score on a single by Justin Fallon. Wilson later came up
and singled to bring in Fallon.
Upperman's final runs of the game came in the top of the sixth inning to provide the final 6-2 margin.
