Stephen Decatur wins battle of Bayside South's best teams with home victory over Snow Hill

A week after they suffered their first loss of the season, the Stephen Decatur boys basketball team (13-1) got revenge Saturday afternoon, defeating county rivals Snow Hill (14-2) 71-55 in front of a packed home crowd.

It was a great atmosphere for high school basketball in the Berlin gym, as the Seahawks hosted a triple-header of basketball games and honored all-time great former player Andre Foreman by retiring his jersey ahead of the anticipated boys varsity rematch. And along with celebrating Foreman, the fans packed the gym to see a rematch of what was a great game just nine days ago, when Snow Hill defeated Decatur 64-62.

Decatur's defense stifled the Eagles for most of the night, and a balanced effort on the offensive side of the ball kept Snow Hill at bay, as Decatur walked away with a 16-point victory. Careen Bolden led the way for Decatur with 19 points, with Brycen Coleman and Davin Chandler adding 16 and 14 points respectively. Kameron Lucas led Snow Hill with 14.

Here is how the game between Decatur and Snow Hill unfolded on Saturday:

  • After struggling to contain Snow Hill's star guards Jayden Hudson and Ke'Andre Nixon in their first matchup last week, Stephen Decatur started the game in an unconventional Triangle and 2 defense, hoping to slow them down. It worked, as Decatur jumped out to an early lead, while Snow Hill struggled to figure things out offensively.

  • Snow Hill would settle into the game in the second quarter, finding themselves trailing by only seven at halftime. But the second half fully belonged to the Decatur Seahawks, as they extended their lead to double digits, forcing turnovers on defense and living in the paint on drives and second chances.

What it means

The rival teams have now split the two games against each other, with each winning on their home floor. They are each other's only loss in Bayside South games this season, and Decatur and Snow Hill still lead the standings in the race to see who represents the Bayside South in the Conference Championship game in February.
