Stephen Curry accepts shot challenge, pledges $118,000 to Hurricane Harvey relief efforts

Former Houston Rockets summer league participant and Active Faith Sports founder Lanny Smith vowed on Instagram to donate $1,000 to Hurricane Harvey relief efforts for every shot made out of 25 3-point attempts. Smith captured All-Conference USA honors at the University of Houston before two seasons on the D-League’s Idaho Stampede from 2008-10, so his pledge promised to be a sizable one.

Except, Smith stepped out of the Instagram video frame to reveal that Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry, arguably the greatest shooter who ever lived, would be the one attempting the shots:

Curry proceeded to drain 18 of his 25 3-point attempts — a cool 72 percent — and then pledged to match Smith’s $18,000 and add $100,000 on top of it, bringing the total donation to $136,000.

“Prayers to the families,” said Curry, who is listed as a shareholder for Active Faith Sports. “We’ve got your back.”

Curry is not the only member of the NBA family to fund charitable relief efforts for victims of the unprecedented flooding in the nation’s fourth-largest city. Rockets owner Leslie Alexander recently pledged $10 million to Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner’s Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund initiative.

Likewise, Rockets point guard Chris Paul donated $50,000 to help Texans defensive end J.J. Watt get his effort to raise more than $12 million off the ground. Meanwhile, NBA rookies and Houston products De’Aaron Fox and Justin Jackson plan to participate in a charity game for relief efforts next month.
