Steelers TE Darnell Washington wants to be ‘mismatch person’ on offense

When we say the Pittsburgh Steelers selection of former Georgia tight end Darnell Washington was a big pick, we mean literally. Washington towers over other players at 6-foot-7 and 264 pounds and he wants to take full advantage of that as part of the offense as the “mismatch person.”

Washington’s strength at Georgia was as a de facto sixth offensive lineman, helping to power the Bulldogs power run game. Despite only 28 receptions in 2022, Washington and the Steelers believe Washington can be a weapon in the passing game and create those all-important mismatches. In three years at Georgia, Washington caught 43 passes for an impressive 774 receiving yards and an elite 17.2 yards per reception. Washington also had three receiving touchdowns.

The Steelers offense is loaded at tight end with Washington, Pat Freiermuth, Connor Heyward and Zach Gentry. The combo of Washington of Freiermuth is going to be a nightmare for opposing defenses this season.
