Steelers are making headway in free agency
Steeler Nation knows they had a great team in 2016. They also know the Steelers should once again be great in 2017. However, the smart fans also know the team was not without its flaws.
After the first couple weeks of free agency went by without making any splashes in free agency, the Steelers have now signed three players in two days.
Knile Davis, Coty Sensabaugh and Tyson Alualu have now all joined the black and gold. The moves may not get Meryl Streep to stand up out of her chair and cheer; however they are depth moves at positions that greatly needed it.

Former Kansas City Chiefs’ running back, Davis will provide running back depth while filling a gigantic void at kick returner. Davis has only averaged just over three yards per rushing attempt; however, his running style should compliment Le’Veon Bell very well. Although this most assuredly closes the book on the resigning of DeAngelo Williams, the Steelers are still expected to draft a running back in this year’s draft.
The signing of Sensabaugh most assuredly is an attempt to avoid having rookies needed to step up in the secondary like in the 2016 season. The former fourth-round draft pick may not wow anyone with his skill-set, yet the signing provides depth to a position that suffered down the stretch. The signing not only helps out the secondary, it helps the Steelers prepare for the draft by not having to reach early for a corner.
Alualu is a former first-round draft pick that never realized his full potential with the Jaguars. However, Alualu is another under the radar type signing that helps teams win championships. He may not wow the masses yet Alualu provides defensive line depth behind Cameron Heyward, Stephon Tuitt and Javon Hargrave. The two-year deal is said to be worth $6 million, $1.75 million of which is guaranteed.
All three recent moves have shown the Steelers want to avoid having rookies needed to step up although Artie Burns, Sean Davis and Hargrave performed quite well in 2016. The moves also give the Steelers much more flexibility during this year’s NFL draft.
When chasing another Super Bowl title, moves such as the few the Steelers have made thus far, can pay dividends as the season plays out.
