Starting 5 of the century: Holland Christian girls basketball - vote for the sixth woman
The Sentinel has picked a basketball starting five for each high school from 2000 to the present and will run the all-century teams during the holiday break. Who should join them? Vote for who should be the sixth woman.
Today: Holland Christian girls.
Here is The Holland Sentinel's starting five. Vote for the sixth woman below. The poll will remain open until Jan. 14.
Kenedy Schoonveld
Guard
Was a talented and athletic guard, who continued to grow during her four years playing varsity for the Maroons. As a senior she was Holland Sentinel Player of the Year and earned all-state honors. She could score but was an even better defender and leader. She took that to Hope College where she led Hope to a national championship and was named National Player of the Year.
Olivia Voskuil
Center
One of the best defenders to ever play basketball in the area, Voskuil was a decent scorer in high school, but made an art out of blocking shots and rebounding. She joined Schoonveld at Hope and became an All-American and a four-time MIAA Defensive Player of the Year.
Carissa Verkiak
Center/forward
Verkaik was the most dominant post player in area history. She led the Maroons to the state semifinals with her ability to score and rebound inside. She could also step out and shoot but did most of her damage in the paint. She went on to play at Calvin where she was the first four-time MIAA MVP and was an All-American every year, including her senior season where she was National Player of the Year.
Breanna Verkaik
Forward
A tremendous slasher and scorer, Verkaik joined big sister as an impact player both at Holland Christian and later Calvin. She earned all-state honorable mention honors for the Maroons as a scorer in the paint and defender. At Calvin, she led the Knights to multiple MIAA titles and was named MIAA MVP and All-American as a senior.
Emily Thomassen
Guard
One of the best pure scorers the area has seen, Thomassen could shoot the ball from anywhere on the floor and score. She had a tremendous outside shot, but could also get to the rim and drew a lot of fouls - and made a lot of free throws. She was also a great leader for the Maroons, helping mentor Carissa Verkaik when she was a freshman on varsity.
