Stars of the Day: Quental hits buzzer-beater 3-pointer to lift Diman hoops to first win

FALL RIVER — It was Hunter Quental to the rescue for the Diman boys basketball team on Tuesday.

Quental knocked down a three-pointer as time expired to lead the Bengals to their first victory of the season, an exciting 51-50 win over league opponent Bristol-Plymouth at Diman Vocational Technical school.

"The guys played hard and have been resilient as we deal with COVID," Diman head coach Tom Librera said. "As a group, they work extremely hard."

Ezra Cote led Diman with a team-high 18 points. Quental finished the day with seven points. Bobby Soares chipped in with seven points.

Nate Varao had six points, including two clutch three-pointers in the second half.

The great team win featured seven different scorers for the Bengals.

Diman (1-5; 1-0 in MAC) trailed 25-23 at halftime.

Holbrook 80, Atlantis Charter 42

The Tritons suffered a tough defeat against Holbrook.

Atlantis Charter's standout on the day was Micky Pimentel, who finished with a team-high nine points.

"Holbrook's defense was too good," Tritons head coach Logan McNamara said. "[We] had too many turnovers that turned into easy points for [them]. Holbrook also dominated the paint. Tough loss."

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Diman 46, Bristol-Plymouth 15

The Lady Bengals took care of business on the road against league opponent Bristol-Plymouth.

Emma Medeiros led Diman (2-2) with a game-high 14 points. Evey Fernandes chipped in with 11 points and Avery Rounds finished with 10 points.

Alexis St. Pierre ended the day with six points in the win.

Stang 43, Archbishop Williams 40

The Lady Spartans edged league opponent Archbishop Williams.

Bridget Markey led the way for Stang with 15 points (4-2; 2-2 in CCL). Sophie Caldwell finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Kate Carreau also ended in double figures with 12 points.

Eleanor Senna (three points) and Leah Katz (one point) each hit the scoring column.

The Spartans travel to Cardinal Spellman on Friday.

GYMNASTICS

Notre Dame Academy 133.85, Somerset Berkley/Case 94.1

The Somerset/Case gymnastic team dropped their opener against Notre Dame Academy.

Top scores for SB/Case were Emily Levine (8.1) and Ariana Ahern (7.5) in the vault.

Emily Levine (6.9) and Erika Baxter (6.3) perform well on bars while Erika Baxter (8.0) and Emily Levine (8.0) were sensational on beam.

Erika Baxter (6.8) and Malena Almy (6.2) did well on the floor exercise event.
