Starkville hires Anthony Carlyle as boys basketball coach after six seasons at Yazoo City

Anthony Carlyle, who spent the past six seasons at Yazoo City, has been named Starkville boys basketball coach.

Carlyle replaces QuVarius Howard and takes over a Starkville program that finished 18-12 and lost in the second round of the Class 7A MHSAA basketball playoffs last season.

"Coach Anthony Carlyle is a proven leader who brings a well-respected track record of not only wins, but player development to the Yellow Jacket program," Starkville Oktibbeha School District Superintendent Tony McGee said in a press release Friday. "He has built successful programs at three different school districts and helped more than 30 student athletes achieve their dreams of playing at the next level."

Carlyle has a 303-111 overall coaching record. He has been part of six state titles in Mississippi including four at Velma Jackson, one at Columbus and one at Yazoo City. Yazoo City won the Class 4A title over Raymond in 2023 and reached the Class 5A final this past season, eventually losing to Canton. Carlyle was also named the 2015 Mississippi Coach of the Year.

"Starkville has represented the state well over the years in basketball," Carlyle said. "Many past coaches have achieved a lot of success, and I'm excited to help build on that for the school and the community."

Carlyle is the son of Archie Carlyle, who had a 1,201-800 record and seven state championships in a career that spanned 45 years and is a member of the MAC Hall of Fame basketball coaching staff. Carlyle credits his father with teaching him by example that hard work creates success.

"He always taught me the value of hard work through his own work ethic," Carlyle said. "He also knew the importance of building relationships − which is better than any basketball play you can draw."
