Stanislaus sheriff’s detectives investigating fatal shooting in Salida neighborhood

The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a fatal shooting committed Saturday night in Salida.

Deputies and California Highway Patrol officers were dispatched about 9:50 p.m. to the 4200 block of San Martin Court, Sgt. Erich Layton told The Bee on Sunday morning. That’s about a half mile southwest of Salida Park.

They found a male lying in the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A man whose home is at the corner of San Martin and Pasatiempo Drive told The Bee on Sunday morning that the homicide occurred outside his house. He heard multiple shots, he said, went outside and saw two gunshot wounds on the victim, who clearly was dead. The resident, who did not give his name, said he did not recognize the victim as a neighbor.

The man said he kept his distance in case the shooter or shooters still were near or decided to return. Sunday morning, he pointed to two spots in the asphalt that he said were pitted by bullets.

Layton said detectives were working to positively identify the victim and were unable to say Sunday if he is a juvenile or adult. “Our Crimes Against Persons team and Identification Unit responded to take over the investigation and process the scene,” he said in a text message.

Anyone with information on the homicide is urged to contact Stanislaus Area Crime Stoppers at 209-521-4636. Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward. Tips also can be submitted via www.stancrimetips.org.
