St. Louis sports equinox: All four STL pro teams play Saturday, three at home

ST. LOUIS – A sports equinox happens when all four major professional sports leagues in the United States play regular-season or playoff games on the same day. That includes the MLB, NBA, NFL and NHL.

In its own terms, St. Louis will come close to replicating that on Saturday.

An action-packed Saturday features games for all four of St. Louis’ professional sports teams, including three on home grounds. With that, tens of thousands of people are expected in Downtown St. Louis on Saturday.

The St. Louis Cardinals, St. Louis CITY SC, and St. Louis Battlehawks will all host home games on April 6, while the St. Louis Blues will play on the road.

Here’s a breakdown of the action-packed sports day:

  • St. Louis Cardinals vs. Miami Marlins (1:15 p.m. CT) at Busch Stadium

  • St. Louis Blues vs. San Jose Sharks (5 p.m. CT) at SAP Center (San Jose, California)

  • St. Louis Battlehawks vs. Arlington Renegades (7 p.m. CT) at Dome At America’s Center

  • St. Louis CITY SC vs. FC Dallas (7:30 p.m. CT) at CITYPARK

It’s the only time all year during which all four of St. Louis’ professional sports teams play on the same day that also consists of multiple games scheduled downtown. All four also played meaningful matchups last Saturday, but only the Blues hosted an opponent.

The Cardinals kick off the party with a 1:15 p.m. game fresh off of Thursday’s home opener. Given they just started the season last week and that their opponent (Miami Marlins) are winless after eight games, this is probably the game with the least important implications of the day.

The Blues are next on schedule after that, facing a San Jose Sharks squad they desperately need to beat to stay in the playoff race. With six games to go, the Blues (84 points) are seven points behind the Los Angeles Kings for the final playoff spot. The Blues will need to come close to winning out to keep faint playoff hopes alive, but the fact they are close this late into the season is somewhat of a positive surprise.

For the Battlehawks, this weekend marks their 2024 home opener at the Dome At America’s Center. The Battlehawks shattered a spring football record by packing 38,000 fans last year. They will look to regain form after losing on a late last-chance field goal to the Michigan Panthers in their season opener.

Just after the Battlehawks kickoff, CITY will kickoff as well. CITY is looking for some momentum after starting the season with just one win and four ties in six games. St. Louis won its most recent home matchup against FC Dallas last August.

In theory, if you wanted to make the most of this day, you could attend the Cardinals game in the afternoon, then either the Battlehawks or CITY game in the evening. Or perhaps you could get tickets to the Battlehawks and CITY game and split time at both after the daytime Cardinals game.

Unless the Blues make playoffs, this will be the last day that all four St. Louis professional sports teams play meaningful games on the same day. Make sure to make the most of it.
