Spring sports squads embark on seasons

Mar. 21—Below is a brief look at recent high school and middle school softball and baseball games for which information was available to The Fayette Tribune (coaches are reminded they can submit results to skeenan@register-herald.com, fayettesports@gmail.com or to Steve Keenan via Facebook):

MIDDLE SCHOOL

Midland Trail 16

Bible Center 2

The Patriot boys initiated their season with a 16-2 road win against Bible Center on March 19.

"Our boys were excited to get the season started," said Midland Trail head coach Nick Mooney. "They have worked their tails off in the offseason.

"I was glad it showed tonight. Bible Center is very well coached and scrappy. They have kids that can play."

Seventh-grader Lucas Young earned the pitching nod for Midland Trail. He responded well, striking out nine batters, scattering three hits and yielding two earned runs in four innings. "Lucas Young pitched a gem; I was excited for him," Mooney said. "He has probably worked harder than anyone to get to this point." Preston Eades struck out one in an inning of relief.

Landyn Cordle went 3-for-3 with a triple and a pair of RBIs to guide the MTMS offense. Rayce Dickerson was 2-for-4 with a two-bagger and drove in two runs, Preston Eades went 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs, Evan Adkins was 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI, Peyton Campbell was 1-for-1 and knocked in a run, and Jacob Brown and Anderson Eades (rbi) were both 1-for-4.

For Bible Center, J. Puffenbarger was 2-for-3, P. Young was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI, and L. Fish was 1-for-1.

Oak Hill 18

Greater Beckley Christian 1

Oak Hill Middle School started out its softball season with an 18-1 win over Greater Beckley Christian on Thursday, March 14.

Aleyah Carpentier led the Red Devil attack. Carpentier went 3-for-4 with an inside the park home run, a triple and a single. In the process, she drove in four runs.

Meeka Miller, Emmy Hudson and Kynn Lewis all went 1-for-2 on the day.

Kynn Lewis and Drea Dom-Smith led the way for the Red Devils with three runs each.

On the defensive side, Hudson pitched a three-inning no-hitter, fanning nine batters on the evening.

Oak Hill 21

Fayetteville 0

On March 19, the Red Devil boys cruised by the Pirates 21-0.

I. Settle powered the Oak Hill hitting attack, going 4-for-5 with a triple, two doubles and five RBIs.

Also for OHMS, B. McClain was 2-for-3 and drove in two runs, K. Patterson went 2-for-5 with a double, B. Elswick was 1-for-3 and knocked in two runs, S. Truman (1-for-2) and L. Kiliany (1-for-4) had one RBI each, J. Hess, T. Donnelly and C. Higgonbotham each had a single, and S. Adkins knocked in a run.

For Fayetteville, Raylen Stonestreet rapped a double in two at-bats, and Gabe Sears was 1-for-1.

On the mound for Oak Hill, McClain struck out eight, yielded two hits and walked two to secure the win.

Stonestreet, Blayne Parsons (two strikeouts), Kohlsen Coleman and Avram Adkins combined on the mound for the Pirates.

Valley PK-8 12

Fayetteville PK-8 5

An eight-run outburst in the bottom of the fifth inning lifted the Greyhounds past the Pirates 12-5 on Wednesday, March 13 in a baseball matchup.

For the hosts, Cedric Coping was 2-for-3 with a triple and a double and one RBI. Hunter Rhodes also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-2.

Also, Xavier Coping was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, Braylin Gregg was 1-for-2 and drove in a pair of runs, John Smiley (two RBIs) and Garrett Pritt were each 1-for-3, Malakhi Hope was 1-for-4, and Isiah Edwards and Ryan Coleman drove in one run each.

Tucker Bragg (3-for-4), Jasper Swafford (3-for-4, double, three RBIs) and Thorpe Fussell (3-for-4, one RBI) each had three-hit performances for the Pirates.

Also, Raylen Stonestreet was 2-for-4 with a double, and Kohlsen Coleman, Peyton Harrah, Blayne Parsons, Avram Adkins and Henry Borgeson delivered a base hit apiece.

Xavier Coping went the distance on the mound for the Greyhounds, yielding 16 hits, five earned runs and two walks while striking out six.

For the Pirates, Paxton Hopkins absorbed the loss while allowing four hits and seven earned runs. Bragg (three innings, four strikeouts) and Adkins (1 2/3 innings) also turned in pitching stints.

HIGH SCHOOL

Midland Trail 24

Summers County 0 (3 innings)

Visiting Midland Trail capitalized on 11 walks and seven errors over three innings in a 24-0 victory over Summers County on Tuesday.

Freshman Madison Rader didn't allow the Bobcats a hit. She struck out six and walked Aleena Reed for the Bobcats' only baserunner.

Rader also stood out at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs.

Also for Midland Trail, Mary McGraw (1-for-1, 3b) and Ava Campbell (1-for-2) had two RBIs apiece. Anna Weaver was 1-for-2 with a triple and an RBI, Kynnedi Habjan-Wood was 1-for-2 and drove in a run, Charleigh Ford was 2-for-2 with a three-bagger and one RBI, and Trinity Wilson (1-for-1), Jenna Stonestreet, Nevaeh Hall, Raygen Parsons and Kylie Ramsey (1-for-1) drove in a run apiece.

In earlier games, Trail lost to Riverside (8-4) and Independence (15-0) before defeating Gilmer County (11-3).

The Patriots (2-2) will visit Nitro Friday at 5:30 p.m. before traveling to Sherman for a 1 p.m. contest on Saturday.

Liberty 14

Midland Trail 3

Brayden Keith was 3-for-4 as Liberty defeated Midland Trail 14-3 for its first baseball victory of the season.

Five players had two hits for the Raiders (1-1), who had 15 as a team. Isaac Williams had a pair of doubles, and Isaac Davis drove in three runs.

Keith went the distance on the mound to get the win. He allowed six hits over six innings while striking out five and walking none.

Aiden Foster had a double and two hits overall for Midland Trail.
