Spring notebook: Ellis Tech's Lopez tosses no-hitter

Week 3 of the spring season featured a number of highlights and top performances.

Ellis Tech’s Roselyn Lopez tossed the first no-hitter of her career while leading the Golden Eagles to a victory over Grasso Tech.

The Killingly girls golf team topped Woodstock Academy by nine strokes to capture its first win in program history.

The Norwich Free Academy boys volleyball team won two of three matches.

And the Killingly boys and girls track teams won their season opening meets against Tourtellotte.

Here are the highlights and top performances from Week 3:

Baseball

Ayden Kempesta went 3-for-3 with two doubles and pitched four scoreless innings to lift Norwich Free Academy to a 14-2 (5) non-league victory over Westerly (R.I.). Jonas Tiburcio, Ryan Cleary, and Logan Deshefy added two hits apiece, while Derek Macy contributed a double and an RBI for the Wildcats (3-2).

Cleary had two hits, including a double, in NFA’s 10-4 loss against Enfield (6-0).

Dominik Kubera tossed a complete game without allowing an earned run to lead Killingly to a 2-1 victory over East Lyme. Kubera, who scattered five hits, set down 14 of the last 15 Vikings batters.

Brady Zadora drove in Hayden Larrow with an RBI single in the top of the fifth to give Killingly (3-2) the lead.

Ashton Goodwin had three hits for Killingly (2-2) in a 5-1 loss against Woodstock Academy.

Kyami Boyce had three hits and drove in five runs to power Griswold past Ledyard, 10-5. Winning pitcher Andrew Hardin (six innings, one earned run, seven strikeouts) added two hits for the Wolverines.

Antonio Durand (two RBIs) and Colin Schulze each had two hits, while Logan Spillane struck out nine over five innings to lift Norwich Tech over Putnam, 5-4.

Softball

Rose Lopez tossed her first career no-hitter in leading Ellis Tech to a 23-0 (5) victory over Grasso Tech. Lopez struck out 11 and walked two. She also went 3-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and five runs scored.

Lily Mae Brisson also went 3-for-3, while Gabriella Jimenez had two hits for the Golden Eagles (2-1).

Camryn Murray went 3-for-3 with a double, triple and four RBIs to power Ellis Tech past Windham, 17-4. Tierra Collette had two hits, including a triple, and two RBIs for the Golden Eagles (3-1).

Hailey Haggett had a three-run double and Kylie Damble added two hits as Ellis Tech (4-1) rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh to edge Windham Tech, 5-4.

Madison Waltke and Ava Boenig each homered and had three hits, while Melina Graziano had three doubles to power Norwich Free Academy to an 8-2 victory over Killingly.

Samantha Baker had two hits, including a home run, and Jayden Durand went 2-for-2 for Killingly (2-2).

Hailey Smith tossed a complete-game shutout with five strikeouts and Boenig hit a home run as the Wildcats topped Old Lyme, 2-0. Melainey Tackling added a single and a stolen base for NFA.

Morgan Cook and Autumn Hanks each had a double and Nyomi Barboza had a triple but Norwich Tech fell to Montville, 10-5.

Briona Frappier had two hits and an RBI for Plainfield (1-3) in a 10-2 loss against Woodstock Academy.

Abby Matheson allowed just four hits while striking out nine to lift Griswold to a 14-2 win over Lyman Memorial. Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the third, Kierra Nelson’s bases loaded three-run triple put the Wolverines in the lead for good.

Summer McLean (three runs), Bella Bruno (double), and Elaina Conrad (two runs) each had two hits for Griswold (2-1).

Boys Lacrosse

Logan Jenkins scored six goals with one assist but Norwich Free Academy fell to Conard, 14-7. Conor Gaughan added one goal and three assists, Gavin Jenkins had one assist, and Luke Wotring made 10 saves for the Wildcats (3-2).

Girls Lacrosse

Laura Farquhar and Riley Ritchotte scored four goals apiece and Molly Crabtree added three goals as Killingly rolled to a 16-4 win over Woodstock Academy.

Emily Lamparelli scored two goals, Morgan Deojay, Lilah Dunn, Illy Malarkey netted one goal apiece, while Erika Horne made four saves for Killingly.

Boys Golf

Colin Williams shot a 41 to lead Plainfield to a 6-1 win over Windham. Brayden Marquis shot a 53 for the Panthers.

Jarrett Towne and Jacob Stone both shot a 38 to earn co-medalist honors and lead Ellis Tech (1-1) to a 164-253 win over Cheney Tech.

Towne was also the medalist, shooting a 37, in the Golden Eagles’ 177-181.

Girls Golf

Killingly edged out Woodstock Academy by nine strokes to win their first ever golf match, 219-228, over Woodstock Academy.

Kendra St. Marie earned medalist honors with a 50, Sadie Murray and Mackenzie Pothier each shot 53, while freshman Addyson Larkin finished strong with two bogeys to help keep Killingly (1-1) in the lead.

Caroline Goderre shot a 44 to earn medalist honors and lead Norwich Free Academy to a 212-249 victory over East Lyme. Erin O’Farrell shot a 50 for the Wildcats.

Boys Volleyball

Tyler McDermott collected 16 kills, 12 digs and nine blocks and Alec Ferland had 29 assists, 13 digs and five blocks to lead Norwich Free Academy to a 21-25, 25-17, 25-15 and 25-16 win over SMSA. Keegan Johnston added 10 digs and seven kills for the Wildcats.

Ferland had 12 assists and five aces, Brock Nowakowski dished out nine assists, while Gavin Hecker had six kills in NFA’s 25-7, 25-7, and 25-6 sweep over Capital Prep.

Ferland dished out 18 assists, Gage Hinkley had 17 kills, Tyler McDermott had 12 kills and seven blocks, and Bryan Contreras added 22 digs but NFA fell short, 3-2, against Wolcott Tech.

Bradley Martell collected 14 kills and six digs, Emerson Avery had 18 digs, and Angel Garcia collected 11 assists, seven digs and three aces but Norwich Tech (2-3) fell to Woodstock Academy, 24-26, 25-18, 29-27, and 25-17.

Boys Outdoor Track

Jeremiah Smith was a triple winner (300 hurdles, long jump and high jump) and Everton Brown won both the 100 and 200-meter dashes as Killingly defeated Tourtellotte, 102-22, in their season opener.

Also for Killingly, Zeke Benoit won the 400 and discus, Calvin Vandale was the runner up in both the 1600 and 3200, Andrew Macintryre won the shot put and placed second in the discus, and Carter Sullivan was third in the 400 and 3200.

Girls Outdoor Track

Emma Miller won the long jump and Jessie Williams took first in the 100 meter dash as Killingly edged Tourtellotte, 50-42. Also for Killingly, Melody Hutchinson won the 1600.
