Spring Garden football coach Jason Howard steps down, takes job in Georgia

Spring Garden high football coach Jason Howard is stepping down from his role to move to Georgia.

He will be an assistant girls and boys basketball coach and have a role in the softball program at Coosa High School in Rome, Georgia. Part of the allure was being able to coach with two of his friends: former Piedmont boys basketball coach Tommy Lewis and Hokes Bluff girls basketball coach Jason Shields. Another part was the financial aspect of the move.

"It was really a financial decision," Howard said, adding he will be able to continue coaching but allowed to pull his full retirement from the state of Alabama due to the move.

Stepping down from Spring Garden was not easy for Howard, as the place will always have a place in his heart.

"Spring Garden is always going to be home to me. I love the community, the kids, the faculty, the staff that I coach with and taught with. It will always be a really special place and I will always consider it home," Howard said.

Howard has led Spring Garden to five straight region championships, two in Class 2A Region 6, two in Class 1A Region 5 and one in Class 1A Region 6. He has made two stints at Spring Garden, spending 12 years in his last stint. He has gone a combined 134-93 over a 21 career at Spring Garden and Ohatchee.
