Sports scores, highlights: Durfee baseball upsets B-R, Westport baseball stays hot

The spring high school season is halfway through for Fall River area teams.

Here's a look at high school highlights from Thursday's action:

Baseball: Durfee 9, Bridgewater-Raynham 4

LOCATION: Bridgewater-Raynham

DATE: May 11

RECORD: Durfee, 5-9 (2-3 in Southeast Conference)

HIGHLIGHTS: The Hilltoppers grabbed a big league win against Bridgewater-Raynham onn the road. Aaron Ferriera pitched 5.2 innings for Durfee, giving up four runs, two earned runs, eight strikeouts and five walks. He also chipped in with a big run scoring single. Alexis Montilla was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Josh Boria and Matt Almedia each had two hits and Ethan Cambra had a big two-run triple. Sebastien Reis came in and got the last four outs of the game.

NEXT UP: The Hilltoppers face Brockton on Monday.

Baseball: Wesport 9, Holbrook 2

LOCATION: Holbrook

DATE: May 11

RECORD: Westport, 10-2 (7-0 in Mayflower Comprehensive)

HIGHLIGHTS: The Wildcats remain unbeaten in league play after beating Holbrook on the road. Luke Finglas (picked up his first win for Westport, pitching four innings of one-hit baseball. He gave up two runs, an earned run while walking five and striking out four. He helped out his own cause with RBI at the plate as well. Will Souza pitched the final three innings of one-hit ball with three strikeouts. At the plate, Souza went 2-for-4 with run, double, and two RBI. Cameron Leary had three hits, including a double, run, RBI, and two walks. Michael DeGagne also grabbed two hits, offensively.

NEXT UP: The Wildcats travel to Southeastern on Friday.

Baseball: Apponequet 1, Somerset Berkley 0

LOCATION: Somerset Berkley

DATE: May 11

RECORD: Somerset Berkley, 12-3

HIGHLIGHTS: The Raiders dropped a close game against league opponent Apponequet at home. SBR manged just two hits in the contest.

NEXT UP: The Raiders travel to Old Rochester on Monday.

Baseball: West Bridgewater 12, Bishop Connolly 2

LOCATION: Bishop Connolly

DATE: May 11

RECORD: Bishop Connolly, 8-3 (3-2 in Mayflower Comprehensive)

HIGHLIGHTS: The Cougars fell behind early and dropped their game against West Bridgewater at home. James Russell took the loss for Connolly. Russell surrendered six unearned runs on five hits over three innings, striking out five, walking three. He alsowent 2-for-3 at the plate. Connoly committed fielding errors, allowing eight unearned runs.

NEXT UP: The Cougars host Westport on Saturday.

Softball: Somerset Berkley 4, Durfee 2

LOCATION: Somerset Berkley

DATE: May 11

RECORD: Somerset Berkley, 9-5; Durfee, 4-9

HIGHLIGHTS: The Raiders won a close game with non-league opponent Durfee at home. Tatum Swanson earned the win in the circle for SBR, pitching the complete game. She allowed just four hits, a walk, one earned run while striking out eight batters. Offensively, Gabriella Nugent went 2-for-4 with a double and RBI. Makenzie Jacob and Victoria DeMatteo (RBI) each finished with two hits. Julia Costa had a hit, RBI sacrifice fly and two RBI. Sydney Bednarz finished with a hit and sacrifice bunt. Jordan Theriault had a hit and walk. Mia Jacob had a pair of hits and scored a run for the Hilltoppers. Katrina Rumsey and Rachael Silva each had a hit. Niyah Boone collected an RBI. Brooke Silvia scattered 10 hits and three runs in the circle.

NEXT UP: The Raiders host Old Rochester on Monday while Durfee hosts Bridgewater-Raynham on Saturday.

Softball: Holbrook 16, Westport 4

LOCATION: Holbrook

DATE: May 11

RECORD: Westport, 7-6 (6-1 in Mayflower Comprehensive)

HIGHLIGHTS: The Wildcats lost a tough league game against Holbrook on the road. Jayda Pequita was 3-3 with a run scored for Westport. Tess Silvia went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Peyton Mahjoory had a pair of hits with an RBI. Morgan Pacheco finished with a single and an RBI.

NEXT UP: The Wildcats host Bishop Connolly on Saturday.

Boys Tennis: Somerset Berkley 5, Seekonk 0

LOCATION: Chapman Courts, Somerset

DATE: May 11

RECORD: Somerset, 10-3 (8-3 in South Coast Conference)

HIGHLIGHTS: The Raiders only surrendered seven games today as SBR posts a shutout win over Seekonk. Joseph Ramos (6-1, 6-1), Zach Costa (6-3, 6-0) and Max Petit (6-0, 6-0) were winners in singles. Jackson Souza and Matt Carlesi won at first doubles, 6-0, 6-1. Second doubles player Ian Jepson and Ian Sullivan won with identical scorelines, 6-0, 6-1.

NEXT UP: The Raiders travel to Case next Thursday.

Boys Tennis: Durfee 5, Brockton 0

LOCATION: Brockton

DATE: May 11

RECORD: Durfee, 6-5

HIGHLIGHTS: The Hilltoppers swept all five matches against league opponent Brockton on the road. Will Rumsey (6-1, 6-0), Jack Fitzgerald (6-0, 6-1) and Colin Fleet (6-1, 6-0) each won their singles match for Durfee. At first doubles, Xavier Inacio and Chrispin Sokol won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1 while Jesse Tamba and Tim Archambault took their match at second doubles, 6-0, 6-1.

NEXT UP: The Hilltoppers face Bishop Connolly on Friday.

Boys Tennis: Fairhaven 5, Case 0

LOCATION: Fairhaven

DATE: May 11

RECORD: Case, 4-9 (3-7 in South Coast Conference)

HIGHLIGHTS: The Cardinals were swept by league opponent Fairhaven.

NEXT UP: Case will face Dighton-Rehoboth on Friday.

HIGHLIGHTS: The Cardinals dropped their meet against league opponent Apponequet. Placing in multiple events were Chris Gaboriault, Devin Silva, Nathan Wood, Jacob Janicki, Nick Thorpe, Landon Cayton and Aiden Parent. Jacob Janicki had an impressive 129 foot throw in discus.

NEXT UP: The Cardinals will compete at the Coaches Invitational this Saturday at Norton High School.

Girls Outdoor Track: Case 78, Apponequet 57

LOCATION: Apponequet

DATE: May 11

RECORD: Case, 5-0 (4-0 in SCC Gold)

HIGHLIGHTS: The Cardinals remain unbeaten after beating league opponent Apponequet on the road. Placing in multiple events were Libby Gazaille, Hannah Santos, Rylie MacDonald, Kambree Nell, Hannah Storm, Emma Bouchard and Ashlyn Byrnes. Allie Holden threw over 100 ft to take first place in the javelin.

NEXT UP: The Cardinals will compete at the Coaches Invitational this Saturday at Norton High School.
