Monday sports roundup: Staunton, Buffalo Gap girls basketball both win
STAUNTON — Jordan Bell and Sam Swift both scored in double figures to lead Staunton to a 39-30 win over Rockbridge in girls baskeball Monday night. The Storm improved to 3-1 on the season.
Bell scored 14 points in the win and Swift added 12. Staunton is at home against Heritage-Lynchburg Wednesday.
The Buffalo Gap (2-0) girls also won Monday, topping Alleghany 41-30. Chloe Emurian and Hannah Coffman both scored 13 for the Bison. The Waynesboro (0-2) girls fell to Monticello 58-37. Kaitlyn Hull had 13 points and nine rebounds while Jazia Goodwin scored 10 for the Little Giants.
The Waynesboro (0-2) boys lost to Monticello 51-42. The Little Giants were outscored 20-5 in the second quarter and Little Giants coach John Spears said that doomed the team.
"We did't handle their traps and double teaming well," Spears said. "Still learning to play as a unit and lack of size is taking a toll on the boards."
Buffalo Gap (1-2) lost to Craig County 52-30 in boys basketball.
