Sports: Lady Cards honored ahead of nationals
Nov. 9—Some TVCC Lady Cardinal volleyball players gained special attention after winning the Region 14 Tournament and securing a return to the national event next week.
Gaining All-Conference honors for their play in the regular season are Setter of the Year Azug Piahg, Libero of the Year Sophia Velez, Freshman of the Year Genesis Rodriguez, First Team Emma Bednerak and First Team Mafer Cisneros Salas.
Named to the All-Tournament Team are MVP Piahg, Salas and Velez.
The seventh-ranked Lady Cardinals, are 30-5 and after a slow start in conference, winners of 12 straight mtches.
The winners of the 12 Division I Volleyball districts and four At-Large teams will compete for the National Championship.
Championship dates are November 15-18, making the Championship a four-day event, instead of three days.
This is the fifth year for Hutchinson will host the false double-elimination Volleyball Championship.
The Lady Cardinals will be the No. 5 seed.
They are scheduled to face No. 12 Daytona State (20-9) at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the opening round.
The Lady Cardinals defeated Dayton State earlier this season, winning 3-2 (25-21, 25-14, 24-26, 11-25, 15-11).
