South Jersey Wrestling Hall of Fame chooses Class of 2023. Here's who made it

The South Jersey Wrestling Hall of Fame will induct its Class of 2023 on Nov. 4 at Masso’s Catering in Glassboro.

The inductees are Joe Derillo (official), Joe Duca (Paulsboro), Scott Garren (Oakcrest/Paulsboro), Ed Giosa (Camden Catholic), Ryan Goodman (Middle Township/Absegami), Errol Hines (Overbrook), Taylor Walsh (Camden Catholic) and Mike Wariwanchik (Pennsville).

The procession will begin at 6 p.m., preceded by a cocktail hour from 4:45-5:45. Reservations can be made by contacting Chris Ormsby at (609) 841-5293 or by email at cormsby119@gmail.com.

Joe Derillo

  • A 1969 graduate of Roselle Park High School

  • Wrestled for legendary coach Ernie Finizio, going undefeated in dual meets, and won a district title in 1968.

  • Starting officiating in 1974; he has worked sectional tournaments, 47 district and regional tournaments and 25 state tournaments, including five state finals.

  • President and vice president of the Southern Chapter of officials and is currently serving as the NJWOA membership chairman.

  • Received his state ring in 1989 for working the state final and, in 2023, received the Richard C. Mirshak Award for excellence in officiating.

  • Retired from Amtrak as communications and signals supervisor in 2014. He was also the National President of American Railway and Airways Association.

  • He lives with his wife Susan in Marlton.

Joe Duca

  • A 2010 graduate of Paulsboro High School

  • Four-time District 29 and four-time Region 8 champion

  • Named Outstanding Wrestler at District 29 as a freshman and OW at Region 8 as a junior

  • Three-time state place winner, including a state title as a senior, beating Del Val’s Bobby Stevely 10-6 in the final. He also placed second as a junior and fourth as a sophomore.

  • Earned a 155-14 career record at the scholastic level, including two first-place finishes at the Escape the Rock Tournament.

  • Was a three-time Academic All-American, a team captain and a NCAA Division I qualifier at Indiana University.

  • Began coaching at his alma mater in 2015 where he still is an assistant coach.

  • Duca resides in Gibbstown with his wife Maria Elena and twin daughters Aurielle and Aviana.

Scott Garren

  • Graduated from Paulsboro High School in 1999.

  • Wrestled at Oakcrest his first three years where he won three District 32 and two Region 8 titles.

  • Won a state title as a senior with a 3-2 decision over Fort Lee’s Brad Christie. He finished his scholastic career with a 116-5 record, which included a third-place finish in the state as a junior.

  • Wrestled at North Carolina State, where he won three Atlantic Coast Championships and was a three-time national qualifier.

  • Was a team captain of the All-Coast Guard Rugby 7s, a team that was crowned national champions in 2012.

  • Graduated from NC State in 2004 and joined the United States Coast Guard where he still works as an aviation survival technician.

  • Lives in St. Petersburg, Florida.

  • A 2003 graduate of Camden Catholic High School.

  • Four-time district and four-time regional champion.

  • Won a state title as a senior, defeating Howell’s Zac Cunliffe, 6-4, in the final.

  • Four-time state place winner, including three appearances in the state final; also placed fourth

  • Compiled a scholastic career record of 144-8, which was tied with his best friend and teammate Bobby Stinson for most wins in the state at the time of his graduation and also included 100 pins.

  • Wrestled at Drexel and placed third in the CAA national qualifying tournament before suffering a career-ending injury.

  • He lives in Chicago.

  • A 2004 graduate of Absegami High School.

  • Was a two-time state champion and three-time District 32 and three-time Region 8 titlist

  • Placed four times at states, including a seventh-place medal while wrestling for Middle Township as a freshman.

  • Finished high school with 145 wins, at the time a state record, with 72 consecutive victories to close out his scholastic career.

  • Captured first state title with an 8-1 decision over Jackson’s Jeremy Edwards and knocked off Lenape’s Doug Umbehauer with an 8-5 decision for his second crown as a senior.

  • Won a Beast of the East title and was named Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament, earning him a No. 1 ranking in the nation at 189 pounds as a senior.

  • Enrolled at the University of Nebraska, where he redshirted in wrestling and was a backup quarterback in football.

  • Transferred to North Carolina State where he was a three-year varsity player on the football team as well as a successful wrestler. He earned three trips to the ACC finals, earning a pair of titles and was named the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler each of those years. Qualified for three NCAA national tournaments.

  • After graduating in 2008, Goodman lived in Paris, where he played quarterback for the Les Cougars football team.

  • Worked as a football coach at NC State and Coastal Carolina for a decade.

  • Lives in Wilmington, North Carolina.

  • A 1981 graduate of Overbrook High School.

  • Was a two-time District 30 champ and a Region 8 titlist.

  • Placed second in the state as a senior, losing to defending champion John Barna of Phillipsburg; finished fourth in the state as a junior

  • Finished his scholastic career with a 71-13-1 record.

  • Wrestled at Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina where he earned a CIAA Tournament title in 1983.

  • Worked for three years at Overbrook’s Youth Wrestling program with his brother Elwood and his lifelong friend Darryl Scott.

  • Resides in Lindenwold.

  • A 2010 graduate of Camden Catholic High School.

  • Earned four District 28 titles and a Region 7 crown

  • Wrestled in the state final three times, capturing a pair of titles. He defeated Wallkill Valley’s Kodie Silvestri, 7-6, for his first crown as a junior and Passiac Valley's Frank Crocco, 8-2, to win the title in 2010.

  • A three-time team captain, Walsh was a key producer for the Irish, who won four state titles. He finished his scholastic career with a record of 144-18, which included 99 pins.

  • Wrestled at Indiana University where he set a NCAA Division I record with 26 pins in one season.

  • Finished his collegiate career with a record of 136-18, which included a program record for pins (69) and four appearances at the NCAA Tournament. A two-time member of the Big Ten All-Academic Team and two-time captain for the Hoosiers, Walsh was a national runner-up as a senior.

  • Co-founded The Prodigy Program, a non-profit organization helping inner-city youth achieve athletic and academic success.

  • Splits his residency between New Jersey and Miami, Florida.

  • A 1995 graduate of Pennsville High School.

  • Won a state title at heavyweight in 1995, knocking off Pompton Lakes’ John Green in the final.

  • Finished career with a 68-18 record, which including a 28-0 mark with 21 pins in his senior year.

  • Captured a gold medal in the AAU Eastern Nationals before the start of his senior season.

  • Was an All-South Jersey defensive tackle in football.

  • Went to culinary school and currently works as the operation manager of food nutrition at Christiana Hospital in Delaware.

  • Resides in Pennsville with his wife Stacey and their three daughters, Alyse, Emma and Reagan.
