Sources: Wizards coach Scott Brooks has franchise support despite 1-5 start
Despite the Washington Wizards falling to 1-5 following an embarrassing 32-point loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday, head coach Scott Brooks continues to have the full support of the franchise, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
Brooks has three years remaining on a five-year, $35 million deal.
Washington has allowed a league-high 125 points a game after losing 136-104 to the Clippers. Dwight Howard, who has been sidelined with a buttocks injury, is expected to make his season debut this week, league sources told Yahoo Sports, and the Wizards hope he can provide a defensive boost.
The Wizards played a spiritless game in Los Angeles, never leading the Clippers. It followed Friday’s 116-112 loss to the young, rebuilding Sacramento Kings. Washington’s lone victory came when it beat the Portland Trail Blazers 125-124 in overtime.
Washington’s All-Star backcourt of John Wall and Bradley Beal vented their frustration to reporters during the team’s current five-game trip and suggested some players might have their “own agendas” and are dissatisfied with their roles.
“We have a lot of talent on this team. Coach is putting us in position to succeed. It’s not on him. I’ll tell you that right now. It’s not on Coach Brooks,” Wizards guard Austin Rivers said Sunday. “I’m new here and I’m looking at that right now. Everybody’s saying something about Coach Brooks, but it’s not on him.”
Washington faces the 3-2 Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday in the final game of its trip.
